This Japanese ceremonial Tenmoku style chawan (tea bowl) is a late Meiji period product. It is 5 ½” in diameter at the top, the foot is 1 ½” in diameter and 2” high. It has a very dark brown with white textured spots on the exterior. The base is not glazed and there is a swirl mark in the center. The interior of the chawan is richly colored black, dark brown, light brown and grayish blue. It is in excellent condition.

A Nezumi Shino covered box or jar. Probably a mukozuke (but for which we are not familiar with examples accompanied by a cover.) White slip inlaid into incised decoration under the warm, gray glaze - conspicuous on the cover but not so much in decoration on the sides of the box where contrast does not succeed as well. We have a particular interest in beautiful old Raku tea bowls and spend quite a bit of time searching for exceptional examples to include in our gallery. Here we see a beautiful work that appears to be at least 100-200 years old which would place its era of production in late Edo or Meiji. Splendid Kuro Raku Chawan by one of the most important potters of all time, the 3rd Raku Donyu 三代 楽吉左衛門 道入 (1599 - 1656) also known as Nonko. It was made around 1650 and was named 'Hekigan' which means 'Pale blue water of a mountain stream'.
It comes in great antique condition. The wooden box bears sign and seal of Judai Tannyû X Kichzaemon (1794-1854) and the authentication of the 11th Urasenke Generation Seichu Soshitsu (Gengensai, 1810-77).
