Nobori banners, carps, warrior's Yoroi and Kabuto helmets, samurai dolls and swords were all a part of the display used for Boy's Day (renamed Children's Day) on May 5th in Japan. They reflect the parents' wish to inspire their sons in manliness, discipline, bravery and the honor codes which are associated with them.

Originally, nobori were used on the battlefield to identify the troops; some were to show the warriors where their taisho (general) was, others were used to shift the troops...

This is a Japanese antique indigo stencil dyed thick cotton kimono from the Meiji period (1868-1912) with a rare weave. It is a very beautiful indigo stencil dyeing. There is a thin stain. This is a japanese antique silk Nishijin textile small case from the Edo period. The dragon and cloud motifs are expressed with gorgeous weaves. There are light stains, but they are not noticeable. There is slight wear on the corners. But it's in good shape overall. Size: Width 20 cm(7.84inch) / Height 12 cm(4.72inch)

This is impressive kabuki Costume textile of the last part of Edo era.(1800-1867) It is beautiful silk of the dyer's saffron dyeing. A cloud and the applique of the Chinese phoenix which I write the kimono by hand and dyed are on. It has a few stains. However, it does not stand out. It does not have damage and is in a very good state. size:121cm x 130cm (47.6" x 51.2")

Antique hakama (trousers) worn by a Noh theatre actor. Decorated all over with a design of gold dragons and lattice work on a dark blue ground. Traditional squared form with pleating and wide white cotton ties. These hakama would have been part of the Noh theatre ôguchi (costume).

An antique vertical wall hanging made of velvet, partially cut and painted with ink and colors. Beautiful depiction of a watermill in a grove with two peasants. Original brocade border and printed cotton lining with hanging loops. Signed and sealed in the lower left corner. Condition: fine, scarce stained, partially faded, few traces of age. Dimension with border: c. 198 cm x 146 cm.

Antique Japanese lady's kimono made with grey-green chirimen silk and white silk jacquard with orange and green embroidery of bamboo and plum blossoms with cranes. Details in wrapped gold thread and use of tiny shibori technique in the leaves and flowers. The front hem of the kimono is decorated with a delicate design of plum blossom in resist and white silk embroidery. The kimono interior is lined with red silk.

Meiji period (1868-1912)

This was made in Amagi area in the Meiji era. This cotton was spun by hand. This Shibori was dyed with an indigo plant of nature. It is a swallow and a rainy image.In the small ring of Mame-ire Shibori, size delicately changes for handwork. And the vertical stripe has little rolling. It is a good point and fun of the handwork. Baby's ceremonial kimono made of asa whose warp and weft are hand-plied. It looks choma (ramie) than taima (hemp), however it is not proven till it is looked by a microscope. Child's or baby's kimono was recycled from adult's and so did this one. It has some stains. The folded seam in the body is unseamed. The second half of the 19th century. 96cm x 115cm

Beautiful Okinawan uchikui which is a furoshiki (wrapping cloth) with cherry blossom design. The dye technique is tsutsugaki and bingata-zome which is traditional Okinawan dyeing technique adding colorful vegetable color or pigment. Uchikui is dyed with either tsutsugaki or katazome (stencil-resist-dye). Uchikui is used for not only wrapping but also covering gifts. This uchikui is two panels sewn together. Wefts are choma (ramie) and warps are cotton...

This is Noshime used in a district for the Meiji period. This is woven with silk and cotton. The line of the part of the waist is drawn on this freely by hand. This has several places of changes of color of the aging, but does not stand out. This does not have damage. This is Kyougen clothes used in a local side. In the present age, this is not seen very much. Size 130cm x 131cm (51.1 "x 51.5")

This is silk beautiful yuzen-dye fukusa textile of meiji Era. This little bird is White wagtail and is hand-embroidered. It's a very polite and beautiful embroidery. Thread of gold is embroidered of the morning sun .The other part is yuzen-dye which was drawn by hand and dyed. It's like a beautiful Japanese painting. This fukusa can be easily decorated on the wall. Recommended for your antique collection. It has few thin stain. However, it is not conspicuous...
