Antique Japanese full size two section isho tansu (chest on chest for clothing), made of kiri (paulownia) wood with original deep reddish brown translucent lacquer finish with wonderful patina especially around the iron work. This chest has four large drawers and a small safe box in the lower right hand corner with two interior drawers finished to match the front of the chest. Iron work includes warabite shaped drawer pulls and large lock plates...

Rare Japanese Funa Tansu known as a Ship Captain's vault chest. Made with beautiful original thick Hinoki (Japanese cedar) wood, with triangular mortis and tenon joinery. The corners and drawers are accented by attractive ash color iron plating. The inside of the chest holds a unique array of seven drawers in a natural finish, with hirute type drawer pulls and all but three with additional locks.

An old Japanese label remains on the second drawer down...

Antique Japanese carved wood kyōgen theatre mask of the moon faced Otafuku. Her name was once Uzume and evolved into Okame which means "tortoise", a symbol of longevity. Otafuku or Okame is considered the goddess of mirth, a cheerful woman who's name means "abundant good fortune". A bringer of victory and success, she is good-natured, good-humored, good-hearted, generous, kind, serene, and patient...

Three Jokan Dolls are part of a Hina doll set for the Japanese Girl's Day. They are to serve the Emperor and Empress with drinks and food. The young and pretty are usually choosen for this role. Many sets have one older married woman sitting in the middle, possibly a supervising figure? Her hair is usually done in a less attractive manner and she often has her teeth blackened. It was the sign of being a married woman at the time...

19th century netsuke depicting sitting Ashinaga (long legs) wearing European jacket and tiger skin pants. In Japanese legends he is often accompanied by Tenaga (long arms) whom he puts on his back and goes fishing. Very nice work, pleasant wear and patina turning honey color on the back where netsuke was touching the silk of kimono. Height 1 1/2 inches.

19th century Japanese small lacquered wood netsuke representing a theatrical mask of a demon sticking out its tongue. Excellent intense face, crisp detailing, nicely lacquered, great patina, some wear to the surface. Signed RYUUN on the back bar - the artist is listed in NETSUKE MASKS by Raymond Bushell, p. 175, signatures 241-243. Height 1.23 inches.

19th century netsuke carved out of kurumi (natural walnut shell) with two panels depicting, respectively, 4 and 3 scholars around a low table heating up wine and food by the rocks under pine branches and moon among wispy clouds. Full moon and chrysanthemum design surrounding one himotoshi suggest otsukimi - a moon viewing party - traditionally held in September. Fabulous clever crisp carving, well captured quiet mood of the scenes, precisely carved diaper ground...

An antique Japanese scholar's desk made of Keyaki (Zelkova) and Suginoki (Cryptomeria) woods. Original hand forged iron hardware including the Hirute handles. Full moon design to each leg. Constructed using through mortise and tenon Japanese joinery.

19th century netsuke of a toad, a snake and a slug on rockery with bamboo grass. The subject of the netsuke is sansukumi: a combination of a snake, which eats a toad, which eats a slug, whose slime is poisonous to a snake - thus forming the circle of deaths. Beautiful rendition of textures - the skin of toad and snake, bamboo and rock surfaces. Warm patina and very pleasant wear to the surface, himotoshi (cord openings) are very cleverly carved as irregular holes in the rock...

The size of Bowl: 7 1/2" Dia x 3 3/8"High. Japanese Ko Imari Porcelain Bowl. The bowl has very good enamel works surface as well as on the backside. Surface side has the design of Eagle with Pine tree, clouds and bamboo grass. Insid rim area with blue underglaze and chrysanthemum design. Outside has a lots of enamel work with Peony flower and clouds. Very good works of blue underglaze design around foot rim. The condition of bowl is excellent, no chip, no crack and no hairline...

Japanese Meiji period cast iron tetsubin in lotus form with a Chinese inscription dating 1702 on one petal. The inscription reads “Kangxi forty-second year, 9th month, 6th day, auspicious day made.” Lotus form lid. Measures about 8 1/4” in length by 4 3/4” high (8” including handle). 19th century. Very good overall condition. The handle can stand upright, but it does not balance easily. There is rust to the interior. From a Scottsdale, Arizona collection.
