Antique Japanese gumbai, war fan. It was sued mainly as a signaling device during war. Today, they are most often seen in use by sumo referees. It measures 21.5" long 11" wide. Meiji 1868-1912. Inscribed with the Hachimandaibosatsu, in the same style of calligraphy as the Tsuruoka shrine in Kamakura. It may have been as shrine offering or a decoration in the shrine. Made of white bronze with a pewter or silver handle.

Chinese porcelain vase with a deep red glaze that has a slight purple iridescence when exposed to light. It has a ridged ring between the vase body and neck, and two shapely handles looking almost like elephants' trunks. Prominent midwest collection. 18th century Size: 5.5" height, 4.5" width

This Chinese carved jade (jadeite) brush washer is a product of the early 20th century. It depicts a lotus leaf and a blossom on its side. It is 5 ¼” long, 3” wide and half an inch thick. It is in excellent condition.

First we hear the clang of the hammer striking the bell, then the steadily approaching clop of his wooden shoes before the horrifying creature dressed in the robes of an itinerant priest appears; a ledger in one hand noting our sins. This is a very rare ceramic figurine by Suwa Sozan I enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Nenbutsu Oni and bearing the seal of the imperial Art Academy. It is 30 cm (12 inches) tall and in excellent condition...

Antique Japanese isho tansu (chest on chest for clothing), made all of kiri (paulownia) wood. The top section has two large drawers while the bottom section has two large drawers with two small drawers in the lower right hand corner. The drawers, which are made entirely of kiri wood, have two hand holds cut into the interior sides for carrying. Hardware is made of blackened iron with round lock plates, corner and side bracing...

Antique Chinese silk robe, made with light burgundy silk fabric, edged in gold embroidered silk. The backside is ornately hand-embroidered with auspicious objects and symbols within flaming rings. The central image is a large yin-yang outlined by gold embroidered scrolls. With some areas of wear. Some fading and losses.

Sino Tibetan bronze statue of the Buddhist deity Tara, the "mother of liberation" and representation of the virtues of success in work and achievements. She is a tantric figure whose image is used as a focus for meditation. She is shown gesturing the Dharmachakra Mudra, or Wheel-Turning Mudra, expressing the continuous energy of the cosmic order. She wears elaborate jewelry and her hair has applied blue pigment. Size: 9" height, 6" width

Beautiful contemporary Japanese todana tansu (shelf chest) with two sections, made from a very light keyaki wood with a nice smooth finish and attractive grain. It has two large sliding doors with open wood panes and interior shelving, two smaller sliding doors below with horizontal slats, and two sliding drawers with hirute shaped handles. Size: 74.75" height, 34.75" width, 17.75" depth

Antique round bronze suiban, a shallow tray or bowl to be filled with suiseki or viewing stones, as well as sand and bonsai, signature on the bottom, 19th century. Size: 3.5" height, 12" width

Antique Japanese bronze hiten (Sanskrit, apsara), celestial musician. Seated on swirling clouds, she moves her flute to her lips to play. Stylistically represented in the Indian or Southeast Asian traditional garb of bodhisattvas with high crown, elaborate pectoral jewelry and flowing drapery. The billowing clouds on which she sits have a green patina.

Age: Taisho period (early 20th century)

This early 20th century ceramic table screen is 7 inches tall, 5 ¼ inches wide and 2 ¼ inches deep. The front middle panel depicts landscapes; the side panels depict flowers and mushrooms. On the back of the middle panel there is a phoenix in spirit garden. Two plum blossoms are on side panels. It is in great condition.

Beautiful two-section Kiri wood tansu from the Matsumoto area with gunbai handles, styled after the gunbai fan. Features heavy iron hardware and locks with flower designs. Meiji period (1867-1912) Size: 42" height, 35.25" length, 17.75" depth

Antique Japanese bronze tray with shell feet, Taisho period 1912-1926. It is incised with a repeating stylized wave pattern and adorned with shells and other marine creatures. Used to create beautiful small garden scenes. It is supported by shell shaped feet. It is irregularly shaped. It measures 1.25" deep 14.5" wide, 6.75" long 2.25" tall with feet.

Exquisite Antique Japanese pair of large garden lanterns. Each is made of cast iron in 10 sections. The roof of each has raised writing, the lantern portions are decorated with kiri blossoms. The pedestals are coiled around with dragons in low relief, the base of each has high relief fu-dogs. Very difficult to collect. Meiji Period (1868 - 1912) All original iron Size of each: 62 1/2" high x 24" wide at widest part. (Each base is approx 20" wide)

This Chinese calligraphy couplet was written by late 19th century Chinese scholar and government official XU SHICHANG. Both scrolls are 16 inches wide and 64 inches long and in good condition. The calligraphy measures 12 ½ inches wide and 52 inches long. Mr. Xu was born 1854 in Tianjing City and died 1939. During the late Qing Dynasty, he was appointed by the Qing Emperor as Viceroy of Manchuria and an official scholar of Ti-Ren Ge (royal chamber or cabinet)...

Two boxes with 18 black and gold decorated moulded ink sticks showing the 18 Lohans. Boxes 29x20 cm. All sticks in excellent condition, no cracks or chips. Undated, estimated to be early 20th century. Can be seen in central London and shipped worldwide.

Pair of Inari Foxes of sculptured and fired clay with luminescent powered white glaze. In traditional Japanese art, a pair of foxes typically flank the deity Inari’s shrine image. But in modern times, images of Inari have all but disappeared, replaced instead by images of Oinari’s messenger, the magical shape-shifting fox (kitsune 狐). Here the symbolism is two-fold. First, rice is sacred in Japan, closely associated with fertility (the pregnant earth) and with sustaining life...

Elegant silver hairpin with gilded bird, possibly a nightingale on the branch of a plum tree. The plum blossoms are made out of small corals. 7 and 7/8” long, Meiji/Taisho.
