A pair of finely made and decorated Imari tokkuri (sake bottles). Bird and flowers in vase decoration rich in red enamel and gilt details over blue underglaze decoration. A pair of such high quality tokkuri is rare. Circa 1800. Both are lamped. One is otherwise in very good condition while the other has a rim chip (pictured). Height of the bottles are about 7 and 3/8 inches (about 18.73 cm)

19th century marine netsuke depicting Ashinaga (long legs) wearing South Sea Islander’s sarong as he sits hugging his absurdly long legs. In Japanese legends he is often accompanied by Tenaga (long arms) whom he puts on his back and goes fishing. Very nice work, beautiful wear to staining, pleasant patina. 18th century netsuke of a reclining monkey, its front paws and upper body resting on a large chestnut. Very strong early piece, great thoughtful face, excellent incised and etched hair, wonderful detailing of its fingers and toes. Netsuke of characteristic 18th century triangular section, warm yellow patina (darker on the bottom where netsuke was touching the silk of kimono), large and deep himotoshi in accordance with the habit of the time. Length 1 15/16 inches.

The quality of the carving is extraordinary. This bamboo brush pot comes from an old German collection, there still is an old inventory number to the base of the piece. There is a Chinese inscription to the piece which can be translated as follows : "the boat is ready to go to heaven, the prince will go seek help from god". Antique Japanese cylindrical hibachi made of bent suginoki (cryptomeria) and decorated with a maki-e lacquer scene of a family of chickens in a bamboo grove.
