The monk Budhai, also known as the Laughing Buddha, is an incarnation of the Bodhisattva Maitreya, the Buddha predicted to succeed Gautama Buddha in the future. The rotund deity carved with a broad smiling face seated with his left leg tucked under his ample protruding belly, the right leg drawn up, the shoulders and extremities draped in a wide flowing robe. A set of five drinking cups, choko, that are decorated with a pattern of underglaze blue bifurcated pines set against a ground of iron red bamboo leaves, with an irregular cloud shaped reserve containing a gilt and iron red prunus tree with a pine bark lozenge superimposed containing a stylised cherry blossom motif set against a seeded green ground...

This is an extremely rare jade picture-plaque that dates to the Late Classic Period around 700 AD. In my 40 years of collecting, I have never seen one for sale. These plaques all belong to one school of carving known as Nebaj-type plaques because the first specimens to be found in situ in the Mayan area come from Cache 14, Mound 2, at Nebaj, Guatemala. All are made of special varieties of jades of Class 3. This type of jade tends to decompose, as in this specimen, which lends to its authenticity...

Extraordinary Korean cabinet in three stacking sections. Covered with inlay on a black lacquer ground. The front is very densely covered with scenes of rural Korea: scholars in gardens, farmers at work, maidens in pavilion windows, and lovely vignettes of mountains, and rivers with bridges and boats. Silver toned chased brass hardware includes many butterfly hinges and lock plates...

A set of five soba choko, straight sided cups, so called boars mouth cups, decorated with a pattern of a grape vine and a wasp (hachi, bee, wasp or hornet) an autumnal motif. Curiously the grapes have been inverted to resemble the more familiar pomegranate. These would have probably been used for serving sake rather than soba noodles. The cups measure in 8cm diameter and are 6.4cm in height. They are in excellent condition, no cracks, chips or restoration...

A rare Tang dynasty celadon yue ware large bowl with bi shape foot ring, good condition no damage please see picture for detail, size: 15.5 cm diameter.

A curious set of sake cups decorated with auspicious leaping Carp, Koi, amongst water weeds with stylised waves with ao-dama, blue balls decorated with a repeating scale or imbricated wave pattern, seigaiha, painted in a limited palette of just iron red, gilt and underglaze cobalt blue. The base of the cup painted with an overlapping lotus leaf border. The rim of the bowls decorated with a diaper pattern with small reserves containing auspicious lotus flowers...

An armorer's (katshushi) tsuba by Miochin Munekane (signed.) Of smaller size associated with wakizashi. Engraved katakiri-bori flowers and vine decoration (six petals on vine, possibly clematis.) Artist line active between 1818 and 1887. Ex Robert Haynes collection. Good condition. A larger, sukashi tsuba at least by the same line, also signed Miochin Munekane, is in the Brooklyn Museum. 2 9/16 inches (6.5 cm) X 2 3/8 inches (6.1 cm) and 1/8 inch (.4 cm) thick.

A well potted porcelain bowl, covered with a creamy white, crackled glaze and an overglaze enameled decoration with lion and phoenix in red, green and black. Ming Dynasty 17th. century Swatow ware. Remarkable on this bowl is the fact that the rim of the bowl seems to be unglazed, and the base is fully covered with glaze. Such was common during the Song Dynasty, but is quite uncommon for the Ming Dynasty. Diameter: 10,8 cm. H : 4,6 cm. Condition: one short hairline to the rim...

A very unusual Arita barber’s bowl dating to the second quarter of the 18th century. The oval body is moulded and features butterflies and peonies on a ribbed ground. This form is very likely to have been based on Dutch Delft pottery or perhaps a silver example. The interior is decorated in a rather striking manner with a band of underglaze blue fishes amongst breaking waves. The reverse is decorated with prunus sprigs, and two holes to the foot-rim to allow suspension...
