This is a lovely ancient Egyptian Scarab, c. 1400 BC, from the famous Mitry collection (see our Homepage). It is 9/16” long (14 mm) and made of steatite, an easy-to-carve stone that hardens when heated. Scarabs empowered life and resurrection and were often placed under mummy wrappings to protect the body and help it resurrect. This Scarab comes in a jewelry display cup.

Standing on an integral plinth against an inscribed back pillar, with prominent facial details, depicted mummiform with the arms crossing his chest, his hands emerging from his tightly fitting garment, holding hoes, a seed sack over his left shoulder, wearing a tripartite headcloth and a braided beard. 4 inches high. Beautifully preserved ribbed bowl of blue-green color with a magnificent iridescene.It is not known whether ribbed bowl was used for drinking, but it was used for washing hands during meals.
