It is amazing that about half of the snuff still remains in this bottle. Lacking a stopper, it was stuffed with tissue when we received it. We added the stopper for display purposes. The scene surrounding the bottle depicts a person riding a buffalo towards a mountain range while pointing behind him to the man with an umbrella. The bottle has a network of crackles stained over to a pale brownish tone. There are some pin pricks from firing, maybe bits of ash. Dates 1800s. 3 inches high.

19th century Chinese lacquer snuff bottle in flask form with inlaid lac burgaute reserves on each side depicting a flower sprig and brocade patterns surrounding the reserve. Lac Burgaute is a French term describing a lacquer technique with inlaid designs using small shapes of iridescent blue-green and purple abalone shell and gold and silver foil. A well-carved ivory snuff bottle depicting two of the sixteen Buddhist Arhat. The bottle is undoubtedly carved in Japan as the neck is made from a separate piece of ivory and screws into the body of the bottle. The carving style suits the subject matter and the bottle has a pleasing patina from handling. There is an unidentified studio marking on the base.
