An antique Japanese large bronze shrine vase cast in a loss wax technique. Depicting waves of a rough ocean with sea spray floating in the air, the female turtle carries a hatchling on its back while facing downward with its mouth open to expel evil spirits. The male turtle is jumping above the waves with its mouth closed to retain the good spirits. All three turtles have their wisps of sea algae growing from their shells as a symbol of the parents old age and the hatchling's life beginning...

Edo Period, ca. early 1800s

This yatate, or traveler's pen case, is made of wrought brass, and has a long tube to hold the brush and a deep pot for the ink, which would have been saturated in a cotton wad. The lid snaps snugly over the pot to contain the ink, and a tab connected to the lid covers the end of the tube that contains the brush. A logo is inscribed on the tab in the form of a hiragana ya beneath a roof-shaped mark...

Antique Japanese bronze mizusashi with lid, decorated with waves. The mizusashi is a vessel used during the Japanese tea ceremony to hold water. The body of the container has a dragon's head on each side with a bronze ring. The lid is decorated with a band of waves, the handle is rounded. Meiji period, 1868-1912. True original bronze Vessal It measures 10" tall with lid, 6.5" wide at opening 11" at widest point (dragon to dragon handle).

Massive Japanese bronze tripod censer decorated on opposing sides with a central panel featuring peacocks and birds in high relief. The handles are stylized bird form. The cover is decorated with stylized pierced waves and topped with an elephant finial. Late Meiji to Taisho Period (1880-1920). A beautiful exceptional pair of Japanese bronze vases, wonderfully cast with trumpet shaped necks and receded panels around the main body. Shakudō (赤銅) is a billon of gold and copper (typically 4–10% gold, 96–90% copper) which can be treated to form an indigo/black patina resembling lacquer. Bordered design with gilt designs of leaves. Gilt imagery of wild birds among crossing branches, reeds, chrysanthemums in bloom, and a bundle of hay decorate either vase...

Japanese Meiji Period large bronze vase. The vase is a stylized chrysanthemum blossom, with the leaves at the base and the long petals reaching up and forming the main portion of the large vase. Unsigned. The vase measures 23 1/8" tall and 10" in diameter at the widest.
