Quality dark patina bronze sculpture depicting the study of a powerful tiger in an unusual position.
The animal's posture is engaging with the paw raised and the tail curled upwards along the end. The streaks of the fur are depicted in a masterly way and highlighted with a strong engraving.
Signed under the belly with the mark of the Maruki company (in the square) and the engraver Atsuyoshi.

Rather unusual 19th century Japanese bronze box for use in the incense game, when the player was blindfolded and given an incense to identify. Three cutouts on the top are made in a shape of paulownia crest used by the Tokugawa Shogun family. The paulownia crest was Imperial and represented the Emperor, but it could be bestowed on someone whose service to the throne was most important. This yatate, or traveler's pen case, is made of wrought brass, and has a long tube to hold the brush and a deep pot for the ink, which would have been saturated in a cotton wad. The lid snaps snugly over the pot to contain the ink, and a tab connected to the lid covers the end of the tube that contains the brush.
