Original painting of Ukita Ikkei (1795-1859), a significant figure in the revival of yamato-e painting, a revered Japanese form of court painting. He was also the master of waka poems and calligraphy.

Ukita Ikkei was captured and imprisoned in Ansei Purge and died shortly after he was released from prison when he was 65 years old.

Superbly executed elegant piece in Japanese taste, great naturalistic carving - see the carved crack in the skin of one chestnut, beautiful surface textures, himotoshi formed by a stem on the bottom. Amida (Amitabha) - "The Buddha of Immeasurable Light and Life” - is the principal buddha in Pure Land Buddhism. Excellent carving of his facial expression of quiet meditation, beautiful rhythm to the flow of the folds of his robe, remnants of gold lacquer on his hair. Wonderful staining and patina, very pleasant to hold. Height 1 9/16 inches.
