Antique Tibetan Gau, or portable shrine, in a metal repousse container with imagery of lotuses and various figures, within is a deity behind a small glass window. Directly below the deity is the face of Kirtimukha, a common image in Southeast Asian temples. The box is secured within a pouch woven of cotton and silk, with a long strap and small stone clasps. 19th century.

Antique Tibetan Mala prayer beads, made with beads of conch shell strung on leather cord. Two leather tassels hand from its sides, with beads of white brass, ending with two highly important symbols in Tibetan Buddhism; a Vajra and a bell. Tibetan malas are comprised of 108 beads, used to count the number of times a mantra is recited during meditation. 19th century

Tibetan wood polychrome carving of Saraswati or Yangchenma in Tibet, the goddess of learning, wisdom, music, and aesthetics. She is seated on her vehicle, a swan, and holds flowers in both of her hands. The charming figure is well carved with pigments of red, black, green, yellow and gold gilt.

A gilt copper repousse figure of Garuda, finely worked with outstretched wings, his hands in the Karan mudra or demon-expelling mudra. He wears long necklaces hanging from his neck, with matching arm bands and wristlets. The front of the figure with gold gilt, blue, green, and orange pigments with black and white pigments for the eyes. Garudas are protectors and enemies of the Naga or serpents.

A Thai polychrome enamel decorated stoneware offering dish. Similar porcelains were made in China for the Thai market. Primitively painted decoration in yellow, green white, red and blue enamels. It is not clear to us whether this is imported production or domestic production. Two Chinese characters appear within rectangular, impressed seal mark on the base. Diameter, about 9 1/8 inches. Height, about 3 5/8 inches.

Vitex parviflora is a species of plant in the Verbenaceae family, known as smallflower chastetree, or Molave tree. It is found in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. The Molave has a natural golden tone that is indicative of the tree.

Old Chin tube skirt, circa 1950, from the Khumi subgroup in Burma. although deceptively simple is really extremely complex; please note in enlargements that the reverse side of this textile does not show any of the pattern on the front. This is made on a backstrap loom of very fine homespun cotton with a beaded fringe along the selvedge. Some stains and a few small holes. L: 180cm/71in and W: 44cm/17.2in

Antique Tibetan bronze figure of the Buddhist deity Kubera, lord of wealth, protector of the physical world. He lounges with piles of gold around him. In one hand he holds a mongoose, the enemy of the Naga (malevolent snake people and guardians to vast treasure), and a sweet morsel in his other. This form of Kubera is very well hand-cast with natural wear and patina.

Nice old storage basket from the Lahu ethic group, Northern Thailand. This has a tough double layered weave with the outer wall made from rattan and the inner wall of bamboo strips. Lahu baskets are held in high regard by the other tribes in the area and were sold or traded to them. This is a genuine old tribal piece and not a tourist piece made for the home décor market. Acquired in 1990, and has been in storage since them a reasonable estimate on age would be 40 to 50 years old...

This adult female puppet is clothed in traditional Thai costume with a open shirt. All parts are hand-carved, tied and strung together, which gives the puppeteer lots of choices of movement. The face has eyes which can open and close independent of each other and the mouth can also be opened and closed. Antique Tibetan flint carrying pouch (also mechag or chuck muck), made of leather with plaques of repousse silver with inlaid turquoise front medallion. Motifs of filigree are seen through the silver plating with a pair of diving swallows. The backside of the pouch with heavy studs. The top of the pouch is fitted with a ring for suspending from the wearer's belt.

This traditional antique basket purse was made and used by the men of the tiny island of Balika,Indonesia. The patina shows both the age and the wear pattern. This is one of a pair of "old purses" which were brought back to the US by an Anthropology intern who spent a summer studying and documenting the lives of the islanders in 1980. The condition is very good and the piece measures 16" high by 12" wide and 4"

Antique Kalinga basket for carrying and storing rice or vegatables made by the mountain people from northern Luzon, the largest island in the Philippine archipelago. This coil basket is perfectly symmetrical and has nice warm patina. The coil weaving technique, materials (finely split rattan and nito vine), and design are consistent with baskets made by the Kalinga tribe. This rare and very beautiful collectible basket is in excellent condition and measures 12” high and about 10" diameter.

Magnificent lacquered basket with domed lid from the Karen ethnic group Northeast Thailand. The walls are constructed of strips of bamboo with rattan bindings and wooden base. The lid has one layer of woven bamboo with a tihck layer of natural lacquer while the lower half has a classic double layered wall with another coating of lacquer inside, which would have made this piece virtually water proof.
