A gilt copper repousse figure of Garuda, finely worked with outstretched wings, his hands in the Karan mudra or demon-expelling mudra. He wears long necklaces hanging from his neck, with matching arm bands and wristlets. The front of the figure with gold gilt, blue, green, and orange pigments with black and white pigments for the eyes. Garudas are protectors and enemies of the Naga or serpents.

Antique Tibetan flint carrying pouch (also called a mechag or chuck muck), made of leather with repousse silver plaques, inlaid with turquoise and coral front. Motifs of filigree and flora are seen through the silver plating. The leather purse is made to hold a flint piece and some burnable material. The flint is struck against the iron blade, making a spark which is caught in the material. The top is fitted with brass hardware for hanging from a leather strap...

Antique women’s shoulder cloth (hti paun) from the Mro or Khami subgroup of the Chin ethnic group. A very old piece circa 1920 to 1940. There are two small repaired holes, minor fraying edge along the selvedge and loss to fringe. L: 174cm/64.5in and W: 92cm/32in.

Early 19th C bronze Southeast Asian betel nut cutter in the anthropomorphic form of Garuda, a bird-like creature in Hindu, Buddhist and Jain mythology. Garuda is believed to be a powerful ever watchful protector with the ability to swiftly go anywhere. The blade is slightly bent from years of use, otherwise in very good condition, this cutter measures 6" long, 5" high, and 1.75 inches across the wings.

A "töla gasa" ceremonial bracelet of the Nias people made from "tridacna gigas" (giant clam shell). For a similar example please visit the website of the "Musée Quai Branly" in Paris. Antique betel nut box from the Philippines, composed of brass and nickel, with separate hinged compartments for the storage of various implements. The leftmost compartment is built up with slaked lime, which releases the alkaloids in the betel nut. The practice of betel nut chewing is common in many parts of South Asia. Slices of the areca nut would be wrapped in betel leaves and chewed, giving a mild stimulant effect.
