A charming antique Chinese basket with basket weave bottom. The inside of the basket is lacquered in red over black, while the rim and exterior are black lacquered with gilt lacquer banding and motifs of butterflies, fruits, and flowers. The basket has a lovely patina and wear consistent with age.

Description:
A black pottery inks-tone was a rare survivor of scholar items from ancient time.
With characteristic image of a toad, the ink-stone was assembled by a cover and a basin.
Vividly it was depicted on the surface with toad's skin when old adhesives were preserved within the pleats.
One old chip was found on the side of the cover.

Made using the local sandy clay from the bed of Lake Biwa, Shigaraki ware is identified by the embedded granules of feldspar. A lovely tray in the shape of a split lotus leaf by Ito Tetsugai enclosed in a period wooden box titled Sencha Shiki Habon. It is roughly 53 x 25 cm (20-1/2 x 10 inches), expertly carved to be incredibly thin. Trays like these were used as decorative objects in the service of steeped green tea, and were very popular from the Meiji through early Showa eras.
