LARGE Chinese Warring States Pottery Jar with Oxford TL Test (475 - 221 BC)

This exceptionally large and impressive pottery jar was made during the Warring States period (475 - 221 BC). It is made from a fine-grained grey pottery, relatively highly-fired, having a distinct ring to it when tapped. It has a wide mouth with a thick rolled rim. It is decorated simply, yet effectively, with raised bands surrounding the body just above its waist...

Antique Japanese small ko tansu, personal chest. Made all of kiri (paulownia) wood with iron hardware. This chest has three large drawers and two small drawers on the bottom. Every drawer is outfitted with a round lock plate, warabite shaped drawer pulls and lovely fan-shaped corner brackets.

Age: Meiji Period (1868-1912)

Antique Japanese choba tansu (merchant's chest) made all of kiri (paulownia) wood with beautiful original reddish brown lacquer finish and original patina. The chest has 5 exterior drawers of different sizes making for wonderful storage. The lower right hand side of the tansu has a small safe box with original locking key. Located behind the safe door are two small interior drawers...

This tall and lovely Hagi chawan rests firmly on a wari kodai or “split foot” pedestal that is unglazed—displaying the coarse rich clay. The crackled milky glaze covers the curves and contours of the bowl, contrasting dramatically between the foot and the clay body. Hagi-ware such as this is part of a tradition stretching back over 400 years and is a high-fired stoneware type of pottery...

An antique Japanese Tohoku Kasane (chest on chest) Tansu made of Kirinoki (Paulownia) and Suginoki (Cryptomeria) woods. Original hand forged iron hardware including the Warabite handles and the nickel rim Butterfy motif lock plates. Four large drawers used for kimono storage and two small drawers used to store kimono fashion accessories...

19th century boxwood netsuke of a dog licking its puppy. Wonderfully captured mood of the scene, superb realistic carving, the breed looks like spaniel or Pekinese, extraordinary depiction of their fur and faces. Great netsuke. Length 1.7 inches.

Fine Large Chinese Han Dynasty Glazed Pottery Hu Jar (with Oxford TL Test)

Japanese antique kannon biraki tansu (tansu chest with hinged doors), made of sugi (cryptomeria) wood with kiri (paulownia) wood on front, large doors with drop in iron hinges (doors can be completely removed), interior has 4 large drawers with bronze hirute shaped drawer pulls, Edo Period. Size: 35 3/4" high x 33 1/4" wide x 17" deep.

Antique Tibetan Prajnaparamita made of patinated bronze. It has an elaborate crown framing the face with angular facial features. The figure is seated in royal ease pondering a shell in its right hand. The left hand holds a lotus sprig with traces of orange pigment. The figure has traces of prance, red, and yellow pigments. The robes are incised with a floral design. 20th century. It measures 12.25" tall.

A fine carved boxwood figure depicting Avalokitesvara, Guanyin Pusa in Chinese, the Bodhisattva of Compassion reclining on an armrest, holding a scripture roll in one hand. Well carved from a single piece of boxwood, good details and fine patina. H 20 x L 13 x W 9 cm ca. Condition: minor repairs/filled and minor losses as well as a few thin drying cracks. China, Qing Dynasty 18th cent.

Very rare complete skull of an orang-outang, decorated with carved typical geometric designs and with the threatening face of a god or a genie on the forehead. The skull has kept its lower jaw which is attached to it with a sliced bamboo tie. The age patina is beautiful. Indonesia, Borneo Island, Dayak Peoples. Height: around 6 1/2" (about 16,5 cm). Very good condition. IMPORTANT: export to the European Community countries only.

A small yet resplendent Japanese four panel folding screen. In Japan, small screens are often referred to as, Hina Byobu. The view is showing a waterfall with different flora and fauna.The work has the distinct characteristics of the Kano school which was the dominant school of painting in Japan. This very nice carved ivory okimono of a young farm girl is a mid-19th century product. It is 5 ¾” high (with base is 6 ¾” high), 1 5/8” wide and 2” in depth. It depicts the farm girl carrying a wood and rope woven knapsack on her back. She holds a basket of fruit with both hands in front of her. Her smiling face is simply charming. The wood base might be a later replacement. It has good patina and is in very good condition. More detailed photos are available.

Antique Tibetan Buddhist ritualistic bone flute, or kangling. The kangling produces a wailing sound, meant to create a mystical atmosphere during tantric rituals. It is played as a gesture of fearlessness and as a way of cutting off the ego. With silver mounts intricately decorated with floral motifs and inlaid with coral. One of the ends has a silver loop to be worn as a pendant. Provenance Ashby Collection

Shallow form with brilliant turquoise color. The cavetto is molded with thirty-two chrysanthemum petal-form flutes that appear convex on the back-side of the dish and encircle the flattened base. A “China” mark is needle-incised on the base. Very good condition. Acquired 25 years ago in North Carolina from an estate that was involved with the tobacco trade in China. It is rare for a large, delicate flat-rimmed dish, such as this one, to survive without damage...
