Larger than usual skyphos swelling at the upper third of the wall. The conical lower part tapers towards a torus foot.
The horseshoe-shaped handles attached just below the slightly flared rim.
Resting surface and underside reserved; the bottom with two glazed circles and applied red wash.
The shape is close to Lamboglia forme 43, and Morel type 4343a, p. 308, pl. 129.

Late Meiji - early Taisho (1910s) Japanese pottery Bizen ware chaire (tea caddy for storing powdered green tea used in tea ceremony). Wonderful potting, buff color clay with beautiful orange streaks, pleasant patina, impressed mark of the potter on the bottom. Later turned dark hardwood lid lined with gold paper on the inside. Comes with very well made shifuku (silk brocade storage bag). Great piece in excellent condition. Height with cover 3 1/8 inches, maximum body diameter 2 3/16 inches.

1800's, finely hand-carved Japanese mix-materials netsuke depicting an Entertainer or Dancer, who is standing on one leg, in the middle of a theatrical performance. He is wearing an Usobuki mask and a dancer's robe.
Excellent detail and patination; he grimaces as he attempts to lift the large stone. Signed Hozan on his Obi, near the ribbon that ties it on his back.
