Late Meiji - early Taisho ceramic netsuke of a chestnut. Bizen ware made in Okayama Prefecture - one of the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan, characteristic fine brown clay. Wonderfully realistic depiction of the object, nice wear and patina, in excellent condition. Height 1 1/16 inches.

Early 20th century Chinese horn cylindrical seal with very elegantly and crisply carved Chinese characters on the base and traces of red seal paste in the grooves. The impression of the seal is shown on Enlargement 1. Beautiful dark dense horn, natural imperfections in the material. Mellow patina, overall in very good condition. Very nice object for scholar’s table. Height 2 3/16 inches, diameter 9/16 inches.

Rather unusual late Qing Dynasty (1890s to 1911) Chinese seal carved out of a natural dense stone with numerous cream to brown colored layers wonderfully resembling flowing hair, and it is not soapstone. The impression of the seal is shown on the first photo (image is flipped left to right to present the image as it will actually print on paper). Beautiful surface, wonderful flow to the texture of the stone, one side is left in its natural state in a very clever nod to a scholar’s sensibility...

Staff carved out of one piece of a hard species of wood. On the top crouches a female figure with long hair, the arms wrapped around her body. The tip is a lighter middle brown while the rest is patinated a dark brown. Probably used in Shamanistic rites in tribal regions. Himalayans.

Some cracks and chips, nice patina.

Very unusual small 1910s Tibetan thangka painted on a buffalo horn plaque with mineral pigments and depicting Bhavachakra - a symbolic representation of samsara - the cycle of repeated birth, mundane existence and dying again without the beginning or the end. The pig, rooster and snake in the hub of the wheel represent “the three poisons” - ignorance, attachment and anger...

Comes with very well made shifuku (silk brocade storage bag). Characteristic rich green glaze on the top, beautiful underglaze brown painting of fern sprigs on one side and plant shoots and brocade patterns on the other, wonderful finely crackled glaze...

A Persian nargileh water pipe cup "qalian" in conical form, made of brass or copper, maybe with gilding. Engraved and embossed decoration of flowers and calligraphy. Condition: traces of usage, rims slightly dented, some discolored areas, (please look at the photos carefully). Dimension: diameter: 8.3 cm, height: 6.2 cm.

Unique carved wood vessel for use in Tea Ceremony for flower arrangement, ikebana. Very smoothly polished and lacquered in the inside; standing on three small “feet”. It has a wonderful smooth patina all-over. L. 26 cm x 17 cm. Meiji-Taisho. Condition: great!

Fascinating Taisho Period C.1920 tea ceremony bronze tripod incense censor. Almost art deco in design and feel. The Murashi-do bronze was dipped in hot oi at firing to create the mottled patinated colorings. The handles are elephant heads. The highlight of the piece is the very rare and exquisite square mouth and lid. The lid is adorned with a shishi lion which covers the hole the incense smoke wafts out of. Simply superb. To date we have never seen a square mouth incense koro...

1900-1920s (late Meiji - early Taisho) Japanese pottery Kyoto ware chaire (tea caddy for storing powdered green tea used in tea ceremony) in double gourd shape with enamel decoration of brocade pattern with leaves, branches and flowers. Beautiful finely crackled glaze, wonderful slightly crooked upper part of the gourd giving the piece extra character. The foot shows stoneware body with concentric lines. Old turned lid lined with gold foil paper on the inside...

A well painted black ground thanka dating to the early part of the 20th century (1900-1920) depicting scenes from the life of the Buddha. No repainting or restoration. The painting measures 10"x13" and is unframed/unmounted. Glue residue on the back, as can be seen in the photos, along with some minor rubbing.

This knife sheath would be hung from the woven shoulder strap by the hill tribe hunter. This one was brought back from the border region by a friend. Now heavily patinated with use and age, it was beautifully hand made many years ago and was both light weight and serviceable. It is a wonderful artifact of an age and culture that is rapidly disappearing.

Antique Japanese tetsubin (kettle for heating water for tea) made of cast iron and decorated with a dragon in swirling clouds. The highly raised design depicts a dragon curling itself around the body of the pot. The clouds over hang in a ledge above the base. There is a large raised cartouche on the back underneath this ridge. The lid is made of bronze.

Very collectible ink cake of a Chinese woman in traditional Chinese attire wearing padded armor and holding the Chinese Army (1912 -1929)flag while her left hand crosses over body and rests on the sword pummel. The detailing is excellent and this is one of those items that looks better in person than in the photos. We feel comfortable with a pre-1920 dating. It measures 5.5" (14 cm) high, 4" (10.2 cm) widest, .75" (1.9 cm) deep.

This round inkstone was carved out of a naturally occurring layered stone...both the bottom and cover viewed from the side show the striation of the stone.The covered has a pond design etched with raised koi fish. It is really lovely. The inkstone is just over 4 inches in diameter and .8 inches in height.
