A huge lead/bronze head of Gorgoneion / Medusa, Roman Empire, 1st.-3rd. century AD.

Interesting oversized item, probably from a piece of furniture or a military cariot. Very high relief and stunning quality portrait, made in lead and bronze.

Size: 10,2 cm. tall and 9,3 cm. wide and weighing 1180 grams - 1,18 kilograms!

Ex. Private Collection in Denmark, formed in the 1980s-1990s, bought from Ancient art dealer Arne Johansen, Pilestrædet Copenhagen c. 1990.

Rather unusual 19th century Asakusa school staghorn netsuke of a fly with spread wings on a folded leaf of a lotus plant with stem, root and 2 tiny bulbs by the bottom. For some reason flies are not common in netsuke. Superb design and excellent quality carving - see the elegant shape of the folded leaf with its veins and delicately incised wing patterns of the insect. Extraordinary warm patina, beautiful darker porous areas and patches of antler outer texture adding charm to the piece...

Late 19th century wooden netsuke of an awabi - an abalone shell with edible mollusk in it forming the bottom. Skillfully carved out of chosen matsu (Korean pine wood) inmodified ittobori (one cut) style characteristic of Hida school of netsuke carvers with clever use of wood grain as element of design. Wonderful piece in Japanese taste (both aesthetic and culinary), superb quality carving of hard shell and soft animal tissue, beautiful patina. Length 1.44 inches.

Japanese Meiji period bronze censer or pot decorated in high relief with two opposing panels, one featuring Chinese scholars in a pine grove and a second with an old man and child under cherry trees. Lion head relief handles at the two sides. Circa 1900. 7" high x 7 1/4" diameter. Weighs 5 lbs. Very good overall condition with a nice patina.
