carved details of the wing feathers and eyes,

This is a wonderful example of mingei craft with a very playful image. Butterflies exist in Japanese folk imagery, but are not so common. This piece would be lovely framed.
It's a variant of the Butterlfy Kachina from Jemez that went to Zuni before it reached the Hopi. Its name is Poli Sio Hemis. White and red case mask, tableta similar to Hemis Kachina except for the addition of a tube mouth. White kilt, sash, etc. White,red, and yellow body paint. Ordinary Kachina dance.

The sculpture is of excellent quality. The Kouanyin is represented seated in a position of royal relaxation. Very heavy wood is covered with several coats of paint. The details are finely incised but are almost all covered by the paintings. The hand was made apart. The expression of the face is calm, attentive and benevolent. The movement of the fabrics is elegant.Traces of textiles.Yuan style but I am not able to certify the authenticity because there are so many copies...
