A ceremonial presentation of Japanese yan one (arrow heads) to the Hachiman deity, performed by the Iwashimizu Hachimangu Temple.
These arrowheads are made the same as swords and other edged weapons as they are folded steel and most are tempered. Yanone were used for battle, hunting, gifts or rewards and for presentations as shown here. There are many different kinds of arrowhead and they all have their own special name. An antique Japanese 2 panel Byobu screen of a mounted Kimono from a Noh play. Embroidered picture of flying Phoenix birds with Paulownia and scrolling vines they use to build a nest. The Kimono is that of a young female character of high aristocratic nobility wearing it as a surcoat in summer. The double Paulownia would represent a marriage as its theme. It is shown hanging on a Tazuna rope. The background is a silver leaf with a vermillion lacquer frame...

A soapstone carving was nicely rendered to depict the grapes and vines.
Nice Qingtien stone in yellowish green tint was finished as a display item on the desk when the back side was flat and plain.

Date: 1910-1930.

Width: 16.5cm. Condition: Some defects to the rims, but not noticeable.
The hue was a bit light than in the pictures.

A wonderful original Japanese six panel byobu screen. Hand painted with natural mineral colors on gofun paper. Unusual low height for the full six panel length. Finely painted pheasant sitting central to the painting. A family of swallows swooping and dancing around in a playful fashion. Natural full wisteria branch rises up to create a perch for the pheasant.

Fun fact, pheasants are the national bird of Japan...

Chinese ceramic Buddha, circa 1900-1930 (Qing – Early Republic). The iconography is quite unusual there is a seated Buddha image on the chest, standing Buddha image on the back, and another image of the Buddha in Parinirvana reclining pose. Overall a very intriguing piece, possibly meant for export to another Asian nation. Excellent original condition- no cracks, chips or frits. H: 15cm/6in and W: 9cm/3.5in.

Antique Chinese jade buffalo with wood stand. The buffalo is beautifully carved with incised details of hair on the head and around the eyes. circa 1900. It measures 4" wide 12" long 6" tall without stand.

An antique Japanese Kansai merchant display store tansu made of Hinoki (Cypress) and Suginoki (Cryptomeria) woods. Constructed using through mortise and tenon Japanese joinery with horizontal side ribs for strength and support. Most likely used for the display of large tall items, a customized shelf could be added for an additional charge.

A rare tabako-ire in the shape of bear claws and netsuke with eagle claw that holds a glass sphere held by a rope, with turquoise ojime. This tabako-ire belonged to an Ainu in the northern of Japan on the island of Hokkaido where the native people, the Ainu, lived. In this extraordinary find there are the symbols of the two animals most revered by this people, the bear that lives free in the tribes and the eagle that was hunted for its feathers. A charming little blue and white Chinese water dropper in excellent condition without hairlines or restoration. Circa 1900-10, it measures 2 inches high.

A fine cobalt blue Japanese belt buckle with a silver back. Excellent details and absolutely perfect. In original box. Never used. Circa 1900. Buckle assembled measures 3.5 inches wide.

This is a rare and large wireless cloisonne vase. It is not signed but because of the Iris flowers and water plants we believe it was made by Gonda. In fact we once had a signed Gonda piece with Koi and almost identical water plants. A beautiful large vase that looks perfect but upon very close inspection, a line deep in the enamel can be seen in bright light. I show it on the last image. This vase 18 1/2 inches tall, heavy and stoutly made.

Charming Chinese antique painting of a brown and white Pekingese dog, very beautifully painted with attention paid to every strand of hair. The dog crouches with tail up as if ready to play. The scenery is grassy with rocks and cymbidium orchids. Painted in ink and mineral colors on paper. 19th century. Antique Himalayan tall yak butter lamp. Made of hand hammered copper with gilt bronze applied details depicting Buddhist auspicious symbols. The butter would have melted and burned for a measured amount of time depending on the size and the amount in the lamp. A small hole in the bottom of the cup would have held a sort of wick to provide a long lasting light. Overall repouse details are in great detail. Original patina...
