An opium pipe from late Qing Dynasty
One from a pair of Guan Jar with completed cover, decorated with a pair of Dragons chasing flaming pearl, base glazed and with six character mark of 'Da Ming Jia Jing Nien Zhe' and of the period. This way of mark write is right one as well, but it's near and predictable as early Jiajing if compare with 'Zhengde' mark and change to be another characters on the middle and later Jiajing till Longqing and Wanli period. Unusual subject, very strong early carving with obvious and expected wear, wonderful face with wide open mouth, superb patina with beautiful warm sheen, deep himotoshi in accordance with the habit of the time. He stands in Mahakaruna Mudra, with his right arm extending from his hip and his left hand covering his heart in the gesture that symbolizes great compassion. DESCRIPTION: A fierce pair of Chinese pottery foo dogs, early Qing, 18th/19th C., covered with a heavy green glaze and seated on pedestals. Each bares its teeth ferociously while holding a ball between their front paws as well as in their mouths. Good detail with finely ribbed backs and curled manes. Very good condition. DIMENSIONS: Each approximately 9 ½” high (24 cm) x 5” wide (12.7 cm).
