Here's a pair of Thinbutted Danish Neolithic Axes dating to late 4th mill. BC.

Thinbutted axes were the preferred tool for clearing land, as the Neolithic civilisation came in the need of fields for cultivation.

Both axes in this pair are nice specimens from this development, and have probably contributed to gaining new ground for early Danish agriculture.

The axes measure 14 & 15 cm each, (c. 6 inches) but it is not unlikely that they were larger originally...

A scarce specimen of a Danish Neolithic Axe with a pointed neck, dating to 3500-2500 BC.

This type of axe were one of the early developments from the from the primitive core axes of the hunters and gatherers. It is found alongside the thinbutted axes, and most finds are in the eastern parts of Denmark.

A scarce thinbutted Danish Neolithic silex axe, mid-late 4th mill. BC.

The axe has a rarely seen feature with a carved ring in the middle of the head. Most thinbladed axes doesn't have this kind of fitting, so this specimen must have been fastened to the shaft in a different way than usual. Maybe used as an adze.

Size is 17 cm - 6,7 inches.

Condition: Choice axe, w. smaller chips. Resharpened in antiquity. Beautiful calky, white patina.

Here’s a really large Neolithic greenstone Axe from the early Funnel Beaker Culture, dating to around 4000-3500 BC.

A massive axe in hand, weighing 3,1 kg. on the kitchenweight.

The axe is made out of greenstone that was polished into the four-sidet shape. 10-12 cm from the edge, the axe ‘hollows’, indicating the place where the axe was fastened to the shaft.

A nicely executed thinbutted Danish Neolithic silex axe, dating to mid-late 4th mill. BC.

Unpolished axe with nice proprotions and clear 'seams' along the edges. Very nice workmanship.

Thinbutted axes were developed to help neolithic people to clear the forest to prepare the land for farming. The largest specimens - up to 40 cm - were put down in marches as offers.

The lot consist of two early, Mesolithic axes from the hunter / gatherer period. Along with these, three smaller axes from later Neolithic period, 2500-2000 BC: A smaller thinbutted axe, a specialized small axe / chisel and a neolithic imitation of an early type of bronze axe.

A thickbutted Danish neolithic axe dating to 3rd. mill BC.

The axe is polished on the sides. The shape is slightly asymmetrical, indicating that it might have been mounted as an adze.

The edge is sharp and could be used even today if mounted on a shaft.

Size is 15 cm - c. 6 inches.

Condition: Nearly superb with just i tiny chip to edge. Very nice grey / beige patina.

A beautiful pair of Thinbladed Danish Neolithic Axes dating to 3rd mill BC.

The 'thinbladed' types of axes, developed in the later 3rd mill. where the flintsmiths began to make more specialised, smaller tools. Both are unpolished with nice glossy patinas.

One is an adze with a slightly hollow edge - the other axe with calky white patina on one side. Mottled beige and white on the other side.
