A large and attractive stone jar, Mesopotamia, Sumer c. 2800-2400 BC.

With the finely concave walls, similar to a jar found in the Royal tombs of Queen Puabi, 2600-2450 BC and jars from Jiroft in this period, dates this jar to the Sumerian period.

The stone used is a rare and very lovely pink calcite, some of the colour probably patina. the stone is banded in clear bands and semi-transperant when lighted. With cream inclusions.

This is an example of a well-known type of Neolithic jade ornament from the Hongshan culture. The piece is of a pale green nephrite with brown inclusions and some minor calcification. It measures 2-3/4" in height and is 1-3/4" at the widest point. The piece has an exceptionally smooth, polished feel and is almost paper thin. There are, of course, no traces of any metal tools having been used and the piece has the characteristic tapering to the holes...

An authentic example of a shape that one only rarely encounters, described by Rawson as "scoop-shaped" in her authoritative book on Chinese jade. A similar example in a darker stone is illustrated at page 115 (illustration 1:1). That piece is described as originating with the "Chahai" culture (Liaoning) and is dated to 4000-3500BC. I have the most wonderful little porcelain garden of place card holders I have ever seen. All the flowers are spring-summer blooms of different varieties. They were made by Carl Thieme, Potschappel Dresden c. 1900. They measure approximately 2 1/4 inches long and 2 inches high, although they may vary slightly from flower to flower. They are all hand made in the fashion of Meissen. All are perfect. They were lovingly stored in a partitioned box with cotton for decades...

This is an authentic nephrite bead from the Warring States period decorated on all four sides with a meandering design, bracketed by inverted "t" shapes. It measures some 3-1/4" in length and is perforated it's entire length, suitable for suspension or wearing. Some calcification is noted.

This is a 10-1/2" x 8-1/2" ball-footed swing-handle serving basket fully hallmarked for Sheffield, England 1895-6. Made by James Dixon & Sons, this basket has ornate repousse decoration in the bowl as well as attractive design to the ornate handle. It has a presentation inscription in the centre, as it was presented as a gift in September 1896, and it weighs an impressive 595 grams. A rare and fine early English Derby porcelain miniature tea bowl and saucer, painted with roses and other flower sprigs, the rims of both in puce. Overall excellent condition, with good colors and paint integrity, no cracks or restoration, and only a tiny chip to the footrim of the bowl. The height of the bowl is 1", with a top diameter of 1 5/8". The saucer is 2 1/2" in diameter.
