A choice example of a of a large Wadj Sceptre in brown hardstone, with the stone aiming to imitate rolled papyrus.

The scroll is widest at the top, where there is a neck below the faux loop for suspension. The base tapers into a softened point. Such an amulet would have been for ritual buriel.

One of the best examples of Japanese bronzes we have seen in an increasingly sparse market, this beautiful piece is worth a second look. Deep, rich Meiji Period (c.1867-1912) bronze with carp swimming over waves in raised relief on one side; geese frolicing among grasses, also in raised relief on the other side. A large and powerful polychromed wooden carving of a Chinese demonic altar guardian figure, possibly Shun-Feng Erh, dating to the 17th century. Multiple coats of polychrome confirm the piece's great age. Intact, with, most probably, a reattached break in the figure's sash, visible in the photos. A full exposition of the role played by similar figures can be found in Arts of Asia, September-October 1998, "Demonic Images on Chinese Altars." The piece stands just over 16 inches in height...

Pair of pretty Austrian Biedermeier Classical silver candlesticks, 1863. Each: Tapering socket with turned-down rim and overhanging base mounted to knopped baluster shaft on domed and curvilinear foot with stippled flowers at corners. Fluting and lobing. Perfect for reading Goethe by candlelight. Marks include dated Viennese assay stamp indicating 13 loths (that is 812.5 silver) and maker’s initials IC. Very good condition.
