The tale tells of a princess, daughter of a Samurai warrior, whose mother placed a wooden bowl upon her head before passing away. She could not remove the bowl and faced ridicule from the local children. She ran away from home and eventually found love and acceptance...

A set of five drinking cups, choko, that are decorated with a pattern of underglaze blue bifurcated pines set against a ground of iron red bamboo leaves, with an irregular cloud shaped reserve containing a gilt and iron red prunus tree with a pine bark lozenge superimposed containing a stylised cherry blossom motif set against a seeded green ground...

Height approximately 16.8 cm (included stand). Original patina except few parts have been polished at the base. In good condition.

A good Arita dish in shurogata hemp palm form decorated with kuri, chestnuts, in a somenishikide palette of underglaze cobalt blue with gilt outlined enamels. Dishes with this pattern were copied at the Derby factory in England in the 1770’s, and moulds of this form were used by the Kakiemon kiln in Nangawara during the period 1750-80.
