An antique Japanese Gyosho Tansu also known as a merchant peddler's chest made entirely of Kirinoki (Paulownia) wood. Five drawers behind the hinged front door and a sixth drawer below the door. The sides have upper iron cord holding rings and cord holes at the bottom which allowed the merchant to carry this tansu on his back while transporting his wares. All original hand made iron hardware.

A kakemono presenting an example of calligraphy by Shunsui Rai, 1743 ~ 1813. Shunsui was a Confucian scholar of some influence in the Hiroshima district and an historian. He is the father of Sanyo Rai, 1781~1832, who also became a notable calligrapher and a painter and scholar.

Beautiful Okinawan uchikui which is a furoshiki (wrapping cloth) with cherry blossom design. The dye technique is tsutsugaki and bingata-zome which is traditional Okinawan dyeing technique adding colorful vegetable color or pigment. This is a Jaoanese antique edo (1863) silk tyosennishiki uchishiki textile.There is discoloration and damage due to slight rubbing.They are not disturbing, and as a whole it is in very good condition.

This is a rare Japanese cloisonne vase from Kato. In all my years I've come across far more signed Hayashi, Sosuke and Namikawa pieces than I have Kato. This vase has stamped silver rims and is 6 inches tall. There is no damage other than a few enamel pits. It was probably made during the 1920's.
