Round in shape in the spirit of a kobako, this rare box in 2 parts in fundame lacquer represents a butsudan (small portable temple) inside which there are, very finely carved, a Buddha on the lotus and 2 apsaras. On the lids lotus leaves seem to fly.

"Sorihiki-happi"from Yusa in Yamagata prefecture which was worn for sleigh pulling. It has cloth with sashiko for reinforcement diagonally, from shoulder to one side of the body, and also both sides. It was worn when sorihiki pull down a sleigh with firewood from the mountain to the foot of the mountain. Yusa sashiko is one of Shonai sashiko in Yamagata prefecture. This happi has fine horizontal as well as vertical sashiko on whole ground cloth...

An antique Japanese Sendai Tansu in a rare 2 section design made of Keyaki (Zelkova) and Sugi (Cryptomeria) woods. All original hand forged iron hardware with Urushi lacquer finish. Rounded Mokko style handles with Chrysanthemum lock plates surrounded by an arabesque leaf pattern. Four large drawers with a hinged security door that hides two small drawers.

An antique Japanese Kotansu (personal storage chest) made of Kiri (Paulownia) and Sugi (Cryptomeria) woods. All original hand forged iron hardware and aged patina finish. Warabite style handles. Straight dovetail Japanese joinery and hardened wood nails were incorporated into its design. Five drawers with a hinged security door that behind hides two small drawers.

An oval English porcelain sugar bowl with the lid and body decorated with blue and magenta bell flowers growing out of gilt plants. The flowers circle both the lid and the body, which has molded ring handles (not working) at the end of the long sides. The knop on the lid is elaborately gilt. Unmarked, but certainly English and from the first quarter of the 19th century. 6 inches tall by 6 inches long by 5 inches wide.

Condition: no chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs...

A scaraboid stamp seal in black stone, made in the Assyrian client states in Western Mesopotamia, fine mid-Assyrian style, c. late 2nd. millenium BC.

Reportedly found near Antioch.

Winged Deity, probably Ashur tending the Tree of Life, interesting symbols. Stylized scarab carved in an attractive black stone.

Size: 22 mm. long and 20 mm. wide!

Condition: Extremely fine and with a nice patina and still with some sandy deposits...

Wonderful birdhead-shaped stamp seal in a glossy green hardstone (rare!), Syro-Levantine part of Mesopotamia, probably 5th. mill. BC.

A pre-historic / Neolithic seal carved with a fine grit pattern in the base, the form of the seal itself as a stylized birds head.

Size: 28 mm. wide and 18 mm. tall.

Condition: Good Very fine, small ancient scuff.

You rarely see 19th Century Korean tiger paintings offered for sale anymore, especially in excellent condition like this one. The last time we had one was 15 years ago, and it will probably be at least that long until have another one to offer. When they do come up in auctions now, they sell for five figures. That's because there is nothing anywhere like Joseon Era Korean tiger folk paintings. Tigers in Korean paintings are not ferocious. They are humorous and full of personality...

A cranberry Moser cup and saucer enameled with gold vines, multicolored grape leaves and applied bunches of grapes. The quatrefoil cup sits nicely in the matching saucer. The cup is 2 ½ inches tall and the saucer is 5 inches in diameter. Neither piece is marked and are in great condition other than wear to the gold highlights.

Victorian Gothic sterling silver goblet. Made by James Charles Edington in London in 1857. Tall and flared bowl with gilt interior; girdled cylindrical stem on raised foot with studded lobes and scalloped rim. Bowl has four studded and stippled strapwork frames of which two inset with flowers and a third with a medieval horseman galloping through a rocky landscape accompanied by a dog, all in relief. Fourth frame engraved “Hugh Eayrs / Memorial / Trophy”...

Fancy American Victorian sterling silver basket, ca 1890. Retailed by Tiffany & Co. in New York. Oval well and wide flared mouth; spread and reeded foot. Rim interior has cast scrolls, shells, and leaves with pendant flowers in open scroll rondels as well as chased flowers and leaves. Open curvilinear swing handle with leaves and flowers as well as central scrolled oval frame (vacant). Fully marked including retailer’s stamp and no. 4727/94...

4 Clingnancourt hard paste porcelain dinner plates with shaped edge, an elaborate gilt rim, a continuous band of hand painted roses and leaves and in the well of the plate rose sprigs. All with the Clignancourt stencil mark in red on the underside. 9 ¾ inches (25 cm) diameter.

Condition: no chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs. Minor wear

A porcelain plate decorated with floral sprigs and bouquets with a shaped rim decorated with gilt dentil edge marked on the underside with a “B” in underglaze blue. 9 inch (23 cm) diameter. This short lived porcelain factory, roughly 1776-1781, had the Duc d’Orleans (cousin of the King Louis XVI) as its patron.

Condition: no chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs. Some wear to the gilding and a little stacking wear.

The attractive upperparts of two larger figural pendant of Pataikos and Shu, Late Period, 7th.-3rd. century BC.

Detailed faience of good colour.

Size: 35-37 mm. tall.

Provenance: Formerly in the private collection of Eberhard Hanfstaengl (1886-1973). He was a famous German Art director and head of the Berlin National Gallery as well as other higher positions. Educated as Art Historian. Comes with COA.

A rare Chinese painted grey pottery figure of a recumbent dog looking up expectantly. Most of the original ochre pigment remains and it has a white stripe to the front. 16cms. long, Northern Wei dynasty, 5th/6th century AD. Provenance: The collection of C. Roger Moss, OBE, formerly the finance director of the Hong Kong MTR. Purchased in Hong Kong mid 1990's. Other examples are in the Meiyintang collection and in the Datang museum.
