Three fine 20th century Japanese lacquer trays. Each with boats and pine decoration in gold tones upon a dark brown ground. The trays gradually bowed and of square shape but with slightly curved sides and raised on four, shaped feet. 11 1/16" x 11 1/8" (about 28cm square). Reasonably good condition with some light abrading easily enough cared for by a specialist.

Together with another, 19th century tray (bottom portion of a box now missing its cover) with beautiful cranes decoration...

Chinese glove puppet depicting a man with bright opera face paint and long beard that appears to be horse hair dressed in a heavily sequined pale yellow robe with red fur accents. The legs are covered in red and white checkered trousers. Painted wood face, shoes, and hands. Measures about 18" long. Possibly dates from the early 20th century. Very good overall condition with minor wear and soiling from use...

Japanese shin hanga woodblock print by Ito Yuhan (1882-1951) titled "Fuji from Taganoura" published by Nishinomiya Yosaku in the 1930's. Signed at the lower right corner of the image. Paper: 16 1/8" x 10 5/8" (image: 14 1/2" x 9 3/4"). The painterly effect in Ito Yuhan's woodblock prints are achieved through the elimination of black key block lines. Very good overall condition. This print was never framed and has excellent color and full margins...

A rush of water descends into mist between the rocky crags tinted with autumns color on this superb silk scroll by Ochi Shokan enclosed in the original signed double wooden box (niju bako) titled Shusei (Voice of Autumn). Top quality, it is mounted in striped silk extended with green and has large solid ivory rollers. The scroll measures 55 x 213 cm (21-1/2 inches x 7 feet). It is in fine condition...

The design is done with "Kaioke", the shell boxes. They were used in shell matching game, a popular game played in the Edo period (1603-1868). The design that you see here is not patchwork. The silk was dyed first leaving the areas protected, then the designs were painted on later. Some needlework was added later to enhence the design. 6 pieces set of early 20th century traditional Korean brass spoons. Relatively rare spoons with the engravings of auspicious words. Generously slight different size of each due to aged handmade pieces. Length 20-22.5cm (7.87-8.85in)...

It is a very beautiful and finely potted vase dated from the early Republic period. The vase is of ovid shape, the sides rising upwards from the base, curving in towards a slightly rounded shoulder and surmounted by a short curve neck upwards to short straight rim. The body is pure white and translucent. On the body of the vase, it is a scene of autumn period as shown by a beautiful bird perching on a tree almost bare of leaves...

Koma Inu Shrine guardians decorate this unusually vivid Ako carpet dating from the early 20th century. The color combination is quite striking, especially when held up to the more standard subdued works typical of Ako. It is 95 x 195 cm (37-1/2 x 77 inches) and is in stunning condition. We found this wrapped in paper in the attic of a Kyoto home which had been sealed off during renovations in the 1950s...

Chinese plaque done in Qianjiang style with a crane flying over with a tree in the scene. There is a poem written in black ink in the upper left corner with a seal in iron red below it. The plaque has an overall orange-peel effect on the surface.

Condition is very good, no breaks or cracks. Some minor wear to the enamels

A lucky ammer in red decorates the inside of this large bowl by Mamiya Eishu enclosed in a period wooden box. It appears to read Kishoho or Kishohon (the method to satisfaction or the root of satisfaction respectively). The bowl is 7-1/2 inches (19 cm) diameter and in excellent condition. A lacquer box decorated with a Rimpa style thatched house under blossoming tree by Kamisaka Sekka dating from the late Taisho period. It is 12.5 x 12.5 x 6 cm (5 x 5 x 2 inches) and is in excellent condition. An identical box which was part of the permanent collection of the Ruth and Sherman Lee Institute along with the original design sketch is visible on page 154 of the book Kamisaka Sekka: Rimpa Master - Pioneer of Modern Design published by the Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art in 2003. ...
