From the island of Malaita in the Solomon Islands, this alafolo, or war club, is in very fine condition, with a rich dark patina. Measuring just under 40", it still retains much of the kaolin inlay and shows surface irregularities from the hand work. It dates to the late 19th or early 20th century. In addition to the geometric design on the "faces", there are linear designs below the noses and at the base...

Offered here an ink landscape on paper by the eccentric and highly sought Japanese artist Fukuda Kodojin (1865-1944) dated 1919. Birds fly over the stubble of harvested rice fields, while odd thatch-roofed huts sprouting from wind beat grass focus our attention on the dark forested left of the scene. The vigorous brushwork and complexity of the scene belie the typical scenes of cold winter death, and seems to intimate a hidden energy busy at the task of Preparing for spring...

A finely painted and gilt pair of Japanese lacquer ware dishes, on black ground and decorated in iro-e-togidashi, togidashi maki-e and kirigane maki-e of shikishi moyou ; the three asymetrically-positioned panels depict a landscape with bridge, buildings in the field and birds. Age: late Meiji(1868-1912). Size : 7 1/2in. (18.8cm) diameter. Condition: excellent. no chips, no restoration.

Golden eyes gaze at the full moon rising over dried autumn grass and wilted flowers on this fine scroll signed Shuso (Hotta Shuso). Pigment and light color on silk in a patterned silk mounting with bone rollers. The scroll measures 19 x 78 inches (47.5 x 192.5 cm) and is in overall fine condition.
Hotta Shuso (1894-1954) was born in Nagano prefecture and studied under Ikegami Shuho, settling in Tokyo. One of his best students, Shuso later became leader of Shuho's Denshindo atelier...

Dark blue ground with decorations in gold and green, seberal colorful scenes with Chinese figures playing Go, making music, riding horse etc. The back of the bowl with dark blue scrolls on a lavender ground. Diameter 41,5 cm. H. 11,5 cm. Condition: very good, apart from some age cracks, wear and a chip on the back of the bowl, some pieces of enamel missing, due to the firing process. Overall in a very good condition.

A very rare painting of a skull and scattered bones lost to autumns dead grasses by important 20th century Zen priest Takeda Mokurai. Ink on paper bordered in brown cloth with gray extensions; dark wood rollers. The scroll is 16 by 68 cm (40.5 x 172.5 cm) in fine condition.
Mokurai began his journey down the Buddhist path at the age of 7 under the priest Ryodo...

Smooth black lacquer covers the mirror like surface of this wooden boat inlayed with mother of pearl down the sides, hiding under the low roof a brass tray for flower arranging. The prow is flecked with gold and the roof decorated with karakusa maki-e designs in black on the flecked surface. The tiller is removable for cleaning. It is 28-1/2 inches (72 cm) long, the ship dating to the opening of the 20th century...

Burmese silver ceremonial or monk's begging bowl. The exterior is decorated in repousse with a wide band of five mythological scenes with one figure and an elephant between foliage. Apparently unmarked. Condition: fine. Dimension: 13.8 cm diameter, 9.8 cm high, weight: 352 g.

Finely potted porcelain bowl, painted in pale famille rose enamels with fruiting and flowering gourd vines. The outside decorated with four "dragon and phoenix" medallions on a yellow ground. Base with iron red six character "Guangxu" mark. Condition: foot rim with an over glazed tiny chip (see photo no. 3), some wear to gilding. Dimension: Diameter: 13.8 cm, 5.9 cm high.

An intricate age darkened Keyaki (elm) carving of two dragons vying for dominance in a sea of clouds, glass eyes glowing softly in the rich red wood. Dating from the later 19th century, the carving is 49 inches (125 cm) long, 4 x 1-1/2 inches (9.5 x 3.5 cm). It is overall in fine condition with some inevitable abrasions due to time. The tennons on both ends indicate this was made to be inserted between two pillars, and was likely the transom over a Buddhist altar.

A humorous looking dragon twists up the paper canvas, eyes on the prize, a tama or Buddhist jewel underlying a dramatically written inscription. What is extraordinary is that the dragons scaled body is performed with a single stroke of the brush! Over this has been added a shadow for the back, and embellishment of the head. It is signed Fujiki Shuchokusai, and comes enclosed in the original signed and age darkened wooden box...

A bamboo brush pot carved in relief of a sage in contemplation wearing a flowing robe surrounded by nature - the hills are carved in relief while trees, grasses and flowers are etched around him. To his right side is a feather fan. There is a signed poem about his feather fan inscribed to the left of the carvings. It is a serene, well proportioned, beautifully carved piece. A good Japanese studio porcelain celadon censer (after Chinese Song dynasty examples), of kinuta color, by Suwa Sozan. Seal impressed on the bottom between the three legs with unglazed feet. With an even more extraordinary, finely worked silver cover with gilt highlights (eyes, beak, comb, feather details, hollyhock blossom stamens.) The treatment and the details of the hollyhock leaves down to the veining and insect nibbles is sublime...
