A rare yari-no-saya of course bristles blossoming tuft-like from a 7 inch black lacquered wooden sheath bound with strips of bamboo resting on a four legged hardwood stand. The Edo period piece is in excellent condition, with only minor damage to the wooden ring about the bottom of the tuft. It is made to take a spear head over 8 inches long.

Unlike in the west, the rat has long been a symbol of fortune in Asia (it is after all one of the animals of the Zodiac). Here we see an interesting play on the animal. He stands on his back legs pulling a sack of treasure and magic mallet, perhaps having relieved these two articles from Hotei and Daikoku, two gods of fortune always pictured with them...

A rare Straits Chinese fan case applied with tiny faceted rocaille glass beads on a green respectively yellow velvet ground, depicting auspicious symbols. Bordered with a woven band, with cotton ribbon and lining. Condition: very good, few glass beads are lost. Dimension: case: 32.2 cm long x 7.8 cm wide.

There is no known exhibition record of Harrowing’s work and little is known of his background other than that he is noted for his portraits of horses and dogs, particularly beagles, hunters, brood mares and coach horses. He is also known to have painted still lifes of game as well as various other farm animals...

A pair of Japanese mixed metal vases or urns beautifully decorated with dragons winding around the body of the vases with designs of clouds inlayed in gold and silver metal with elephant head handles inset with gold metal eyes. Measuring approx. 5.5 inches tall in good antique condition. A fine pair of the finest quality would enhance any collection.

What a fantastic expression worn by this Edo p. Seto Hand warmer (hibachi or properly Shuro/ Te-abure). The dark shiny Seto glaze suits well the beast portrayed. Coals would have been burned inside, heating the surrounding pottery walls, and the piece would have been placed on a step leading into the house for guests to warm their hands on or used within the house in a more formal room. This sculpture of an African American man is beautifully sculpted, in a style reminiscent of early 20th century artists who were inspired by the stylized forms of African traditional art. Good size, it measures 10 1/2" high, and the base is 6 3/4" in diameter, and is a heavy wood, possibly maple or walnut. Japanese Edo period thickly potted Seto stoneware circular form dish with raised edge designed to hold lantern oil. The cream-colored crackle glaze dish is decorated in copper brown in the fukizumi (blown ink) style with a central fish laid over a jar.
