One of a kind and absolutely rare: Very large Oni Shino Yohen Tsubo by Tsukigata Nahiko, enclosed in its originally signed double wooden box. A true masterpiece, 8,3 kg heavy, 28 cm high with a maximum circumference of 88 cm, imagine that.
Tsukigata Nahiko (1923-2006) actually needs no introduction. He was not only an accomplished ceramic artist, but also a musician, painter, calligrapher and sculptor...
One of the best pieces I have ever seen by this revolutionary artist, a dark flask covered in rivulets of flowing ash by Kakurezaki Ryuichi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Kuro Tokkuri. Two shell shapes where it was propped in the kiln stare out like eyes on some ethnic mask from the back side, the front awash in a molten ash, tendrils of which wrap around like many fingers. It is breathtaking, and I am already jealous of the lucky soul who will get to keep it.

An excellent companion to the Hagi Chawan also by this artist, here is a precipitous mountain form covered mostly in drifts of white and thin veneer of glaze over its gritty clay surface. The form is that of the mountainous spires of Yabake, on the Island of Kyushu south of Hagi. The Vase comes with Exhibition panflet with very similar vases like this one.

Rivulets of ash dribble down the red earth sides of this vase by Nishiura Takeshi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Echizen Henko. Positioning in the kiln, with one shoulder angled toward the flame, ensure the lip and one rounded corner are charred in that distinct ocher inidicative of the region. Elsewhere the ash is molten green. A great example of this lesser known ancient kiln site. The vessel is 18 x 13 x 17.5 cm (7-1/2 x 5 x 7-1/2 inches) and is in excellent condition...

A very unusual large Tsubo covered in iridescent metallic glaze over beige windows with millet white florals enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Testsu Sabi-yu Zogan Kusabana-mon Tsubo (Metallic Rust Glaze Tsubo Inlayed with Floral Motif). This is certainly one of the more unique works I have seen by this important Mashiko artist. The iron seems to shimmer in the light, not holding just the reds of rust, but blue and green and black, depending upon the light and angle. Mar...

A massive sculptural vase by Kyotos Inoue Yoshihisa (b. 1947) in the form of a crowing cock. This piece was featured in the Nitten in 1973 and is visible in the catalog for that year. Yoshihisa studied ceramics under Kiyomizu Rokube VI, certainly one reason for his emphasis on sculptural concerns. His work has often been accepted to the Nitten National Exhibition, as well as the All Japan New Crafts Exhibition where he received the Members prize, and the Kofukai-ten. A spectacular Vessel covered n a torrent of color by Kishimoto Kennin enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Iga Shiho Mimitsuki Hanaire(Four Sides Iga Vase with Ears). Here is a piece with attitude! A proud Iga vase with two “ears” like elbows on its hips. A spectacular work by Ohi Toshio enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Ohi Hakuyu Saiki. The feeling is like Raku, with a very thin glaze over rough clay affecting hi-iro colors within the glazing. Here another igneous form by Tsujimura Shiro enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Iga Mentori Hanaire . Like the previous Shizen-yu work, this shows a state of nature, not a state of intent, as if the piece came to be. Wood-fired Disk-shaped Vase by George Gledhill; Payette, ID. Ash glaze exterior, white glazed interior. H.3"(7.5cm) x Dia.9.75"(25cm.)
There have been several influences to George Gledhill’s ceramic work. Buddhism has been a guiding force in life for many years, and George even visits local prisons to teach the Dharma to inmates. Through pottery and Buddhism, he was exposed to Tea practitioners who complimented his work and encouraged him to produce Tea wares. Their introduction to the worl...
Elegant and tall Hagi vase with a coating of lavender ash glaze diagonally across the body. A strong delineated collar for a mouth and two lugs on either side punctuate this vase. A large tsubo in gold and white slip by Miyashita Hideko enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Haku-a Kaki Rin to Shite Yo. The title speaks of standing up alone, and the artist told me it was a piece she created when she came to terms with the grief of her husband passing away and had decided to make a fresh go of life. The form was influenced by ancient Chinese maternal sculptures, thus the forward, broad stance. An image of one of the sculptures can be seen on a ticket stub fro...
