An incredible mixture of colors glisten like the walls of a Limestone cave in the hills of Akiyoshidai, the karst regtion south of Hagi where the important artist Kaneta Masanao created this bowl, enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The style is Kurinuki, not formed on a wheel but cut and worked from a block of clay, an approach the artist is famous for. The coloration is unusual, a dramatic leap from his usual subdued lavenders and whites.

A fabulous thin walled Bizen basin made for use as a fresh water container for the Japanese Tea Ceremony with black lacquered wooden lid enclosed in the original signed wooden box by Living National Treasure Yamamoto Toshu. This burnished style reminiscent of sangiri techniques is the signature work of this important Bizen artist. Here a plethora of colors vie for dominance on the ordinarily sedate brown clay.
