Robust and classically medieval in origin, this Seto-Guro chawan was made by Toki Intangible Cultural property, Mizuno Takuzo. Wow, this Iga Shinogi Mizusashi by Atarashi Manabu is as good as it gets. The torn and slabbed surface is rough, accentuating the particular grains of Iga clay, covered in a smattering of smokey charring and spattered ash. The vessel comes enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Iga Shinogi Mizusashi. It is 17.5 cm (7 inches) diameter, 20 cm (8 inches) tall and in perfect condition, directly from the artist this summer. It compliments perfectly the Chawan from the same firing.

Like a previous chawan this hanaire vase is a lesson in texture, covered over in a thick feldspar Shino style glaze meant to imitate shark-skin on a form resembling bamboo with a flared mouth to complete the piece. The highly textural glaze is in constant motion with areas of small and large nodules colliding to animate the form that has iron added under the glaze to also create a moody, atmospheric presence to the pot. This large and robust Shino chawan was made by one of master chadogu, tea pottery makers of Japan, Tamaoki Yasuo. A double gourd shaped covered water jar by Tsukigata Nahiko enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Oni-Shino Mizusashi and inside named Robai-ju (Robai is a type of early blossoming plum, Ju is ball).
