Large, oburi style Shiro-Hagi chawan with notched wari-kodai and profuse crackling around the bowl. I have no idea who made this large chawan as I can not read the seal, partially covered with glaze.

The are a few small spots of glaze loss as can be seen in the pictures, but all in all, this is a very handsome and strong chawan that looks great on a shelf. No box.

Like most Shigaraki-wares, this piece has a somewhat primal feeling to it, as though it belongs to a previous geological era in time. Rivulets of vitrified green, grey, and yellow ash stand against a background gradient of soft to intense ochres of the clay body. The intense firing process of this type of pottery for days in an anagama kiln results in a beautiful ashen glaze with a warm, soft, yet vibrant glow when set in the light.

Wonderful porcelain tsubo with exquisitely painted sparrow and foliage across the surface with vivid watercolor like effects calling to mind a scene right out of early autumn. The detail of the painting is rather intricate and obviously owes its inspiration to many of the Meiji era painters of which Watanabe Seitei (1851-1918) immediately springs to mind. Phenomenal and classic Mino-Iga style vase with unquestionably the finest wood fired surface I have ever seen by Mizuno Takuzo. Large and solitary in its presence, the wide array of textures and coloration paints a unique and powerful form that few can achieve and I doubt I will see a pot with this varied a surface again the ferocity of the firing process is written across the surface. Perfect for use or just as a point of contemplation, this Mino-Iga vase stands alone among the tradition.
