Large, oburi style Shiro-Hagi chawan with notched wari-kodai and profuse crackling around the bowl. I have no idea who made this large chawan as I can not read the seal, partially covered with glaze.

The are a few small spots of glaze loss as can be seen in the pictures, but all in all, this is a very handsome and strong chawan that looks great on a shelf. No box.

Licks of blue fire rim the blast of pale white covering the upper reaches of the dark earth. The shape is hammered and beaten by the flame, shinshoku wear from the extreme heat beginning to degrade the lip. Large and impressive Iga chawan by rising Iga-yaki star, Atarashi Manabu.The surface of this chawan is covered in a sheet of glass and there is wonderful bidoro drips and clam shell impressions where the chawan was fired on its side. The kodai, foot is wonderfully sculpted and fits well into the hand when in use.

A huge Yakishime vessel by modern ceramicist Mihara Ken (b. 1958) enclosed in the original signed wooden box. This piece has an almost haunting presence, the hada sandy and rough, you would think it could crumble in your hands, yet is fired so hot it rings like a bell when tapped. Sophisticated, yet naturalistic set of five, hand made, hand cut leaf plates with red enamel leaf designs under a washed gold gilt surface. This Rimpa influenced set for casual or kaiseki use are by veteran Kyoto Kiyomizu potter, Heian Seiun and most likely date to the 1960s. A massive sculptural vase by Kyotos Inoue Yoshihisa (b. 1947) in the form of a crowing cock. This piece was featured in the Nitten in 1973 and is visible in the catalog for that year. Yoshihisa studied ceramics under Kiyomizu Rokube VI, certainly one reason for his emphasis on sculptural concerns. His work has often been accepted to the Nitten National Exhibition, as well as the All Japan New Crafts Exhibition where he received the Members prize, and the Kofukai-ten. This rare Ido chawan is glazed in a milky ash, Hagi style glaze and was presumably made at the kiln of the Tenryu-ji temple (Kyoto-yaki) as it bares the seal of the kiln. The clay was made using ground roof tile, a piece brought back from China which is explained in the accompanying paperwork provided with the chawan. This chawan has an elegant form and well addressed kodai, foot and has red over glaze (aka-e) decoration of the kanji “JU” and the cipher of Seki Bokuo.

Large and impressive take-no-zu style bamboo vase by Mino veteran and Oribe specialist; Sato Kazuji. Exceptional throwing, modeling and spatula work define this dynamic vase and what the photos fail to capture is the beautiful surface iridescence about the rich green Oribe glaze.

This vase measures 11.5" x 5" and is in perfect condition with the original signed box.

This classical ,generous and inviting teabowl chawan is by legendary Hagi master potter; Yoshiga Taibi (1915-1991). The sumptuous form is highlighted with a thin ash glaze over the rich hagi clay and crackled slip with tones running from Hagi creamy pink to lavender with the gritty clay visually punctuating the foot/kodai. This is a bowl of profound subtleties and though it may sound cliché, this chawan looks many times better in person than my poor photography can show.
