So-called "chain mail" jewelry is not uncommon in the world of vintage Mexican silver. One can find them in all forms, with or without stones, and in all widths, signed by known maestros and by less-celebrated makers as well. There is something very slick about this design, its interwoven "mesh" inhabiting quite comfortably both the Art Deco and early modernist worlds. The necklace at hand is an example of the narrower versions but very well made and with good weight to it...
An ultramodern bow tie 925 sterling cuff bangle bracelet from the 1970s. This modernist bangle features a punched and ridged bow with a central dome and it measures 2-1/4 x 1-3/4" across the interior, 3/4" at the widest and the bow is 2-1/8 x 1-1/4". The bow is longer on one side than the other and you could certainly decorate it with beading or other items through the holes...

Finely detailed sterling and carved onyx face pin with earring dangles. It is approximately 2" x 2 1/8".
Made in the 1960s, this vintage Mexican sterling silver bracelet consists of figural disks developing in a row defined by lengths of double-woven, thick chain. I have seen this combination featuring three different kinds of disk designs. While here we have depictions of the country's history as well as symbols of its old religion (a jaguar warrior portrait, Quetzalcoatl, Mexico's state Eagle) the specific bracelet design can be found with Mexican coins or representations of the zodiac cycle...

A substantial set from Taxco's "middle period" this stunning necklace and earrings demi combines chunky cylinders of azur-malachite with shadow-box sterling box links. The result is quite impressive as the primarily green hues of the stone (the malachite is predominant here) are tempered by the variegated brown of the inclusions, all colors finally reflected in the glowing silver. I love a good chain necklace and this example combines good length with a presence that will never go unattended...
Today I have a most coveted Antonio Pineda onyx crescent bracelet. It is a published design in SILVER SEDUCTION by Stromberg. The height is 1 3/8th's inches and the weight is 117 grams. A picture is worth a thousand words, they say, and in preparing to offer this fantastic find of mine, I am putting my trust in popular wisdom. When one has been dealing in vintage Mexican silver jewelry for as long a time as I have, one tends to hear that little "devil" in one's ear louder and louder, claiming that there is nothing new or exciting left to be encountered. Thankfully though, life and the old maestros of Taxco still keep some aces hidden up their sleeve. The early sterling and carv...

I am a big fan of Carmen Beckmann’s Etruscan style jewelry - her domed Etruscan ring is a foundational piece in my collection and I enjoy it thoroughly. There is something about the way the wire-work and tiny florets with their bead centers oxidize with time that creates an air of warm, comfortable luxury around them that gets me every time. I could easily see the dangle earrings at hand worn by dignified Roman matrons leisurely enjoying their honeyed wine. Measuring 1 1/4” long by 1 1/8” ...

Cast as a lion's head and upper body, this ring is especially compelling for its intricate detail. The lion's mane continues from the head down to the ring's shoulder, and the tail rises from the band on the opposite side. It shows hardly any wear; the patina on the lower band suggests there is some age to the ring. The ring is unmarked and is sized to 6 ½; the lion's head measures about ¾ inch wide and ½ inch high. Weight: 9.5 grams

This delicate link bracelet features four oval cabochons, each prong-set in a decorative sterling frame. Sterling openwork panels, each set with a single marcasite, connect the frames. The spring-ring clasp is secure, and is marked sterling; one of the connecting panels is also marked sterling on the back. The bracelet measures about 7¼ inches long by about 5/8 inch wide.

Less-is-more is definitely the way Carmen Beckmann chose to go with this vintage Mexican sterling silver and amethyst ring. Maestro Mateo is mostly known for his brutalist rings and his work spans the 1980 divide. Most of his pieces that were made after 1980 are wrought in 950 silver, which almost became the norm in Mexican jewelry during that period. Finding a ring of his from the 1960s-70s is a real treat but the excitement is even greater when one comes upon a pendant bearing his signature, and an early one at that! If my memory serves me well, this is the second Mateo pendant that I have had in all my years of bu...
