In the years I have been buying and selling vintage Mexican silver jewelry I have seen many "mask" pieces - this is, after all, one of the "pillars" in the genre's design index and I am also very partial to it and always on the look out for good examples. I have to also admit that seeing jewelry of a certain kind over and over again makes one a little more blasé and hence, more difficult to impress. Yet impressed I was with this astounding combination pin / pendant I am presenting here...

A heavy silver plate oxidized bracelet featuring applied grapes and leaves. Unmarked, it measures 7" x 1-7/8". The bracelet can be a bit tricky to put on with the pin type clasp.

Substantial very big and heavy antique ring by the Baltimore jeweler and decorative arts metalware maker Carl Schon. Not well known outside of Baltimore, Schon worked in an Arts & Crafts and transitional/Art Deco style from the late 1890s until his death in 1923. Later Carl Schon pieces were made by the firm which continued under his name. This piece is very early, circa 1920. It is marked with tiny initials...

This bracelet is hallmarked Mexico Silver and it is a refreshing take on a Spratling design but leaving it to be all of it's own originality. The bracelet is 1.5in. tall in the front with the repousse band goes to .50in. in the back. This is a heavy piece in your hands and is 2.5in. in diameter. There are 6 turquoise snake eye stones on the cuffs of the hands. The amethyst balls are free of any damage and they are 5/8th's in. wide and have a gorgeous deep purple color.

Sterling silver pendant with a large rock crystal, by Finnish designer Salovaara. Designer’s mark for Salovaara: an ice bear, 925, A for the city of Abo (Finnish: Turku) where Salovaara had his workshop and U7 = year mark for 1972. The back of the loop with the mark for import to Sweden (three crowns in an oval an S). To the underside there is an engraved date, probably for the time of presentation to a former owner...

This elegant, hand wrought set was designed by Taxco artist William Spratling in the early 1940's. The necklace measures 20 1/2" long & weighs 100 grams. Each link is 1" wide. The bracelet is 7" long X 1" wide and has it's original safety chain. It weighs 45 grams. Both pieces are in beautiful condition with a lovely, aged patina. The design is pictured in MEXICAN SILVER by Penny Morrill & Carole Berk. It is also shown on Phyllis Goddard's site spratlingsilver.com.

A Birks sterling marcasites brooch and earrings set from around 1930. This fine, vintage set was sold by Birks, Canada's leading retailer of fine goods. The brooch measures 2-3/8" x 1-5/8", it is laden with glinting graduated marcasites (or marquisites ), it has a safety catch, and it has a superb curled design with great appeal. The screwback earrings measure 7/8" x 3/4" and they have assorted sizes of marcasites and a floral style...

These teardrop-shaped earrings feature purple, grey, violet and black feathers enclosed between pieces of resin or a clear composite. A cut-out zigzag design reveals the feathers through the sterling silver frame. The earrings show some tarnish; they have not been aggressively cleaned to avoid damaging the inserts. The screwbacks are in good working order; one exhibits the eagle 3 mark for Mexican sterling, the other, an unidentified geometrical maker’s mark...

Alfredo Villasana was one of the finest Maestros of the Mexican Silver Renaissance. This treasure is a hand made pectoral that is shadow boxed with a nielo underneath and leaves styled and cut out with precision running across the top. The necklace weighs 105 grams of thick silver. This beautiful unsigned ring has been attributed to Bernard Instone, one of the well-known Arts & Crafts era jewelers, who frequently didn’t sign his pieces. He often used leaves-as-prongs for setting stones, and as was often the way in the A&C movement, he didn’t use costly stones nor gold, so he could keep his prices affordable. The pendant is composed of a forged oval frame surrounding an applied lost-wax cast piece of organic design. It is suspended from a sturdy leather cord that exhibits some wear and stiffness. The necklace is secured by a spring-ring clasp marked sterling. The pendant is unmarked, but tests as sterling silver; its surface is tarnished and could use a light cloth polishing. A vintage sterling silver hand wrought bangle bracelet and brooch by the well regarded silversmith, Herman Glendenning, (1906-1977). Glendenning worked for the prominent silversmith Arthur Stone and attained the Master Craftsman rank of the Society of Arts and Crafts, Boston, in 1927.
