Something of a frustrating, mystery painting.......oil on canvas, 36" by 23 1/2" (44" by 31 1/2" framed), apparently unsigned, probably American but could also be European, the subject a view onto a small inner courtyard or air shaft, seen through an interior doorway. The work certainly exhibits a modernist touch in some spiky passages in the vegetation, and the choice of red/orange color contrasting with the other more somber tones...

A fine quality impressionist painting by the hand of noted Swiss-born artist FRIEDA HAUSWIRTH DAS (1886-1974), the scene featuring a dark-skinned man with balanced shoulder carrier on a beach where cattle seem to be congregating. The 14 1/2" by 18" oil on canvas laid on board is a rare work by the world-traveled artist, who is also known as an author, illustrator, and progressive feminist for her time...

Oil on canvas, 50" by 31", unframed, signed on the spine of the book at lower center in true trompe l'oeil style and dated there 1901. This is a beautifully painted work by an historical painter of late 19th century California, ALBERT JENKS (1830-1901). It is already quite impressive as it is, but, with a gold frame around it, I can envision this gracing the wall of a law office or museum...

Oil on canvas portrait of a middle aged man seen in profile, not signed on the front, possibly signed on the reverse, 20" by 16", unframed. The man appears to be a clerk in his work clothes, circa 1910 to mid 1930 perhaps. On the reverse written faintly on the canvas is "WM. HODES FRANKLIN" or similar--. Below that is what appears to be "BRACKMAN"...

A beautifully framed, plain beautiful oil on canvas painting, 15" by 18" (23" by 25 1/2" framed), the subject figures in a country landscape, painted skillfully in true impressionist style, by listed French artist EUGENE CHAFFANEL (1860-1929). The artist is Benezit-listed, though biographical information seems to be scarce. He hailed from the Nancy region of western France, and seems to have made a trip to New York in 1887. Chaffanel painted landscape, genre, and portraits...

**One of two works by the artist in my shop** Oil on canvas, measuring 16" by 20" (22 1/2" by 26 1/2" as nicely framed), titled "Pond Farm" (and original $400 price) on the original Dalzell Hatfield label affixed to the backing. I do not see an actual signature on the painting itself but have not removed the backing board to search the reverse side. The painting is in excellent original condition...

Painting on panel of a young Egyptian youth, 15 3/4" by 12" and not especially complementary, modern day framing, signed at lower right, with reverse original label from Schwartz Freres, of Cairo and Alexandria. The painting is signed at lower right corner, the name appearing as "Thor......". To date I have been unable to decipher the full signature. This is a most unusual and appealing pop art painting (unframed, 27" by 35") by a mid-coast California artist, Tom Shultz (1943-2017). Works by the artist, who passed away in his mid seventies, have been exhibited at a number of galleries, particularly in the Paso Robles area of central California. The piece is entirely hand painted (not silkscreened, which I at first thought a possibility) on a spongy, soft pulpboard, which the artist has also painted on the reverse (an abstract)...

Very large (48" by 48", unframed), decorative, attention-getting oil on canvas of a family of three musician performers in a park setting, painted in a humorous fashion, the family in costume and appearing clown-like, by the French mid century impressionist artist ROGER ETIENNE (1922-2011). The painting is titled on the reverse "Jour de Fete" (Holiday), inscribed "Pour Renon", and signed by the artist and dated 1972. This is probably the largest work I have ever seen by this French artist, and...

From our Fine Arts and Americana Collection, a very good and sizeable original oil on canvas seascape from Peruvian artist Fernando Giron of Miraflores Peru. Executed in a warm earth tone palette of various browns, sea-green, pale yellow, pale orange, and white, depicting crashing waves upon a beach at sunset with gulls in the foreground, this is a very nicely painted and evocative piece.

Giron is apparently not well-known yet beyond the Miraflores / Lima art circle, but this could change...
