Oil on canvas painting of pink roses in a glass vase with metal kettle on a table top, 20" by 24" (25 1/2" by 29 1/2" framed), signed at lower right by artist Nell Smith. I do not see a listing for this name. The age of the painting judging by style, frame and stretcher would be circa 1940. Condition is good save for overall soiling and a roughly 1 3/4" narrow paint loss area at top right. Overall a very "Shabby Chic" work.

This work graphite on paper is signed and dated 1933….Clyde Singer was born in the small town of Malvern in 1908 and grew up in the rural hills of Ohio. Educated in the local public schools, he had an early interest in art and, after high school, attended the school at the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts. In 1933 he received a scholarship to the Arts Students’ League in New York City where his mentors were “American Scene” painters John Steuart Curry and Thomas Hart Benton...

A charming drawing of a village square and church, in graphite, a little wash, and perhaps chalk, on mellow, soft laid paper, 10 1/2" by 8 1/2" (17 1/4" by 13 1/2" in inexpensive modern framing), signed at lower right by the French artist and illustrator RENE ROUSSEL (1885-1962). The artist though undeniably talented, has unfortunately and unjustly become obscure, little known to today's collectors. It took an internet search to find his birth and death dates and assemble a biography of sorts...

A google search shows an interesting tidbit concerning a woman by that name in Kern County, California, estranged from her apparently wealthy husband and attempting to sue him in the year 1937...
