An etching titled at lower left margin "A View of Rotterdam", signed with initials in the plate at right and dated there 1910, and pencil signed by the artist at lower right margin. The panoramic view would have been created when the artist was in his early 30's. The well-educated Gleeson studied at the Art Students League in New York with William Merritt Chase and Francis Mora, at the Saint Louis School of Fine Arts, at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris...

For the collector of Ashcan School/The Eight, or early 20th century American art, here is a special work: a pencil signed print by JOHN SLOAN (1871-1951), titled "Man Monkey", and inscribed "100 proofs". This special piece, which dates to the year 1905, came from the personal collection of Peter Morse, who wrote the catalog raisonne of Sloan's graphic work. There is a charming typed letter in a sleeve on the reverse side, on the letterhead of Morse in Washington, D.C., dated Christmas 1966...

A charming, whimsical, beautifully painted oil on canvas painting of a brown-robed man of the church in a spring forest setting minding a pig, while a vision of loveliness, a nude young female, appears at right. The work is unsigned but most certainly would have been painted by a listed artist, I would think around the year 1910. The piece is unframed and measures 21 1/2" by 18"...

Paul Cesar Helleu 1859-1927 French This is an original drypoint etching by French artist Paul Cesar Helleu. It is identified as Elegante au Chapeau, created and printed C. 1900 in a small edition. The image measures 15 3/4X11 1/8 inches. Twice signed in pencil lower left border and lower left within the platemark. Printed on a medium weight wove type paper with the Helleu watermark. Richly inked burr still evident.

Good-sized watercolor painting of one of the famous canals of Venice, a gondolier and his vessel featured in the foreground, signed at lower left by the artist, B. Venuti. This work, 22" by 15" (31" by 23 1/2" in gilded old oak early twentieth century framing), probably dates to about the turn of the century. I do not see a listing for an artist by this name, though there is a "Benvenuti" who painted similar works, so I entertain the possibility that this might have been signed with a pen name...

A PAIR of very clean French artist 19th century etchings, the subject of both upper class women, one by CHARLES WALTNER (1846-1925), the second by ERNEST JOSEPH LAURENT (1859-1929). They are also very nicely (identically) framed in tasteful black and silvery framing, including silk mat and inner fillet; the frames also in excellent condition. The combination of art and quality framing makes for a most handsome decorative addition to your traditional interior...

“Moonlight Serenade” Oil on canvas framed measuring 39” x 55”, artwork measuring 32” x 48” Biography Henri Aimé Duhem (7 April 1860, Douai - 24 October 1941, Juan-les-Pins) was a French Impressionist painter. He was descended from an old Flemish family and originally practiced as a lawyer. In 1887, his passion for drawing and watercolors finally led him to go to Paris and enroll in the drawing classes of Henri Harpignies...

Pastel on paper drawing of a rocky coastline with sailing craft offshore, apparently unsigned, 9 1/4" by 23", (16 3/4" by 31" as framed), circa 1900. The style of the drawing is reminiscent of that of American artists like Alfred Thompson Bricher (1837-1908). The popular and common pastel art of William Chandler also comes to mind. The work needs a new mat and the old acidic wood backing is best replaced. Otherwise for its age this work is in excellent condition.

Oil on panel signed indistinctly lower right. Panel measuring 13" x 16" presented framed in a fine contemporary gallery frame overall size 18.5" x 21.5".

Here is a classic old painting on gray academy board, the subject roses in a vase, 20 1/2" by 14 1/4" as framed, signed at lower right "M Say" or similar. It likely dates to circa 1900, at a time when young ladies were expected to take up painting as a domestic skill, and still life of roses was always a most popular subject. Today these works are sought after by those decorating in the shabby chic style...

Watercolor on paper painting of creamy roses, 17 3/4" by 14 1/2" as simply framed, signed at lower right "Vivian E. Tiedemann" and dated there 1907. This is a typical turn-of-the-century work by an amateur artist, though, a skilled amateur. Such watercolor paintings of roses were popular in the Victorian era and even into the early new century, artists continued to paint them in oil and watercolor. This example is in excellent condition...

An unsigned oil on artist board of beautiful nude done circa 1900 in the style of German born English artist Walter Sickert 1860-1942, know for his Nude paintings and a friend of the impressionist and neoimpressionist

A very appealing small forest interior painting on board, 9" by 11" (12" by 14" in modern day gold framing), unsigned on front but on reverse in old hand is written (difficult to decipher) "near XXX farm Hampstead Heath/Oct. 3 1908 5 PM/P. P. (XXXX)". The word after P.P. is the last name of the artist but it has defied my efforts to make it out. The scene is painted in luminous tan colors with light grayish green and cream here and there, all in a very impressionistic blond to silvery light...
