Oil on canvas, 21" by 26" (26" by 31" as framed), the subject a winter landscape with coniferous trees in the background, a small unfrozen lake completing the scene. This is an impressionistic work by a nicely listed painter, the works of whom appear with frequency at auctions in Finland. I currently do not have a lot of biographical information on the artist, who was, judging from the label on the reverse (see photo), a member of the Society of Finnish Painters...

A PAIR of oil on canvas works, each 14" by 10", unframed, featuring hanging wild birds against a simulated wood-grain background, painted in the then-popular realistic trompe l'oeil manner of painters like William Harnett in America, or Michelangelo Meucci (1840-1909) in Italy. The paintings likely date to about the 1880's. They are signed but despite my best efforts, I have been unable to make out the worn and faint signature. An image of that area is provided...

Oil on canvas painting of a young blued-eyed blonde woman in circa 1940 hat and provocative gauzy top, 24" by 18" (31" by 24 1/2" framed), signed at lower center by listed French artist CESAR VILOT. There does not seem to be a biography of Vilot but his works of sprawled female nudes and ballerinas show him to be a talented painter of women. This work somewhat resembles the work of artist Jean Gabriel Domergue. Condition is excellent; frame shows some wear especially at left...

This is an eye-catching painting of good size, by an artist demonstrating tremendous skill in the handling of light. The alpenglow on the distant peaks at sunset (dawn?), the shadowed areas, the areas in bright sun.....all handled with great control...

The scene is a small boat harbor with a traditional church and coastal village in the middle ground. Bonas was born in Barcelona but was in France in his twenties. Exhibitions throughout continental Europe and then the US were held in subsequent years...

PAIR of oil on gray art board panels, each 14" by 4 3/4", 20" by 10 1/2" as framed, unsigned, the subject of each a picturesque old castle perched on a prominent mountain outcrop, in each view, a bridge with tiny figures crossing a torrent in the foreground. These could be a "before and after" scene of the same view, as one bridge is of stone and obviously more substantial than the other, which is of wood...

Oil on canvas, 36" by 24" (45" by 33" as framed in wood), the subject a wicker chair draped with lacy cloth, a painting in the background and tea pot at right, signed with what appears as "Egeun" at lower right and dated 82. A Greek-speaker emailed me to inform me that the signed name is, in Greek, "Eleni" (Greek for "Helen"). This is a bright, contemporary painting in really excellent, fine wall-ready condition.

Oil on board painting of a sunny street scene in southern Italy, a central figure walking towards the viewer and others going about their business including washing clothes. The painting, signed at lower left "Pasini", measures 17 1/2" by 11 1/2" (21 1/2" by 15 1/2" in attractive old gold framing). The work likely dates to about 1900 or 1910. There is a light accumulated soiling and yellowed varnish that would make a cleaning well worth the investment...

A fine portrait of a lovely young girl, oil on canvas, 14" by 10 1/2", unframed, signed at upper left by listed French artist MAURICE JACQUET (1877-). Jacquet seems to have painted mainly portraits of young women, but a few landscapes are known. This work has just been cleaned and relined, as when found it had a very dry blanched unstable surface, and some loss areas. Before lining, the restorer took photos of the canvas stencil on the reverse, which was of the house of Blanchet, 38 Rue Bonap...

An antique COPY of the 1886 painting "Emperor Justinian" (also known as "Justinian in Council"), by famous French artist Benjamin Constant (1845-1902) known for his Orientalist works and excellence as an academic painter. This copy is clearly marked with the name of the talented copyist at lower left, adjacent to a fair facsimile of the Constant signature. A charming oil on canvas painting of central Paris by the Seine, a number of tiny figures enjoying their walks along the river with its barges. The artist signed at lower right "L Florguin" and dated the work 1953. Very surprisingly I see only scant information under this name. However the artist was obviously very familiar with the French naive school painters who flourished in the immediate post-war years. Measurements are 18" by 13" on the stretchers and 23 1/2" by 18 1/2" in "distressed"...
