This study of a museum visitor was originally in the collection of the Mobile Museum of Art, Alabama. The painting is signed lower right in pencil and inscribed on the back. The image measures 16X12 inches. A few minor spots of touch up, nothing major. A fine modernist impression. Rosenberg studied under Frank Duveneck.

Strangely, I can find only minimal references to an artist by this name, despite the amazingly skillful and sensitive rendering of the clusters of grapes. In such cases I am often left to wonder if perhaps the artist was actually someone well known who chose to sign the work with a pen name for one reason or another...

It is titled on the reverse in the artist's own distinctive handwriting "Looking Down Bush Street" and initialed and dated 1930 (not signed on front, but, this is definitely the artist's way of signing; I have handled a number of his works in the past)...

Although unsigned (and Detreville's output frequently WAS unsigned), the handling, subject matter and color palette almost certainly suggest the hand of the noted California painter. I have owned and sold other unsigned paintings as being by Detreville, and I will stand by this one being by him as well...
