Sometimes he is listed as Samuel JAMES Clark--there appears to be some confusion in the auction record...

From our European Collection, a fine 19th century original oil on panel by British painter and listed artist William Anslow Thornley (1857-1898), entitled "Moonlight on the Thames." Signed "Thornley" lower left.

Size and condition: 13 inches x 11 inches framed dimensions, approximately 10 inches x 8 inches unframed image size. This painting has been taken care of well, there is only some very minor age-related soiling and minor scuffing to the frame.

Oil on canvas landscape of a forested, peaked mountain rising into scudding clouds, unframed, signed at lower right and dated 1876 by the noted well listed American artist from Massachusetts, D. JEROME ELWELL (1847-1912). This work measures 14" by 24 1/2". Elwell was intent upon his art at an early age, when he was spotted on the Gloucester waterfront sketching the marine scene, by one Samuel E. Sawyer, a wealthy Gloucester ship owner and patron of famed artist Fitz Hugh Lane...

Oil on unusual crimped/bent metal tin panels, each extensive landscape painting measuring 5 1/2" by 9 1/2" and about 1 1/2" margin all around, each signed at bottom in red "H. ROUX". These are beautifully painted works of the nineteenth century by an apparently listed Swiss artist. The pair has some scratches and small abrasions in a few spots, and one has a scratched area at top extending into the gold margin; but, these flaws are not so significant as to affect the overall impression...

Small oil on board painting of houses at left, feathery trees occupying the right hand side of the composition, unsigned, 8" by 11 1/2" (11 1/2" by 15" in mid 20th century frame). The painting reminds one of the Dutch Old Masters though it was very likely executed in the 19th century, perhaps in England. It shows evidence of its age, with soiling, a missing fleck at right center (the white spot) and some smallish scrapes in sky at upper left...

He was an extremely diverse artist painting genre, figure and portraits, as well as street scenes, rural and coastal views in Britain, France and Algiers. He studied in Birmingham and exhibited a total of 279 works there between 1864-1915, the latter being posthumously exhibited...

Oil on canvas painting titled at lower left "Morn. nr. Frinsbury Kent", signed at lower right "Alf. Bennett 87" (and titled again and signed again by the artist on the reverse canvas), 20" by 30" (27" by 36" as framed). The scene feature a filled hay barge at left with two figures aboard, two houses in the middle distance, and tall ships in the far distance. Frinsbury is in southeastern England, east south east of London, not far from the mouth of the River Thames...

A genuinely antique, late 19th century oil on canvas scene of distant snowy sunlit mountains and closer mountains surrounding an inlet or fjord, several small figures at center, wood-frame structures at left, and long wood canoes in the foreground shore. The work measures 20 1/2" by 30 1/2" (27 1/2" by 37" as framed). I have carefully searched canvas, stretcher and frame for any evidence of a name, or other information, and have come up empty...

An old and antique American painting of a seated young man playing a flute in a vaguely defined interior, 24" by 20" (32 1/2" by 28" in mid 20th century frame), unsigned. The talented artist remains anonymous but was obviously talented and probably listed. Note the mantel clock at left and elegant European-style table and chair. Over the years the painting has darkened dramatically, taking on a yellow-brown cast due to decades of grime and smoke. A test cleaning by a restorer shows the whit...

A well executed oil on wood panel still life of yellow roses, green grapes, goblets, glasses, decanter and candle stick on a table cloth, signed illegibly at lower right (appears as "Hans Meh...." or similar), circa 1890. The work measures 21 1/2" by 28" and the panel is 1/2" in thickness. The signature certainly appears to be European. I have tried and tried again to make it out but have not succeeded. It might well be German, or even Hungarian I am thinking, there being a strong tradition ...
