This is an unusually fresh vintage watercolor, 10 3/4" by 20 1/2" (18" by 28" as framed), dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, by the noted American artist DAVID JOHN GUE (1836-1917). The colors are bright and there is no foxing nor moisture damage. ALL PHOTOS ARE TAKEN THROUGH NON GLARE GLASS so actual painting is sharper and more attractive than it appears through the blurry glass. The subject matter is likely an east coast beach...

This is a simple composition but the anonymous artist was obviously skilled in the use of watercolor and also had a sense of composition. In the style of noted California artist Ellen Burpee Farr, this is a classic late nineteenth century watercolor of the distinctive leaves and "berries" of the pepper tree commonly seen in Southern California. This is one of the rarely encountered works of Latvian-born artist FREDERICK (FRIEDRICH) A. LEEKNEY (1880-1939), signed at lower left, where he wrote "Laguna Beach 1923".
