Late 19th century watercolor painting of the famous Spanish Steps in Rome, an historical church forming the backdrop to a scene still iconic today. The painting is signed at lower left "Conti"; it is possible it is a work of the listed artist Tito Conti (1842-1924) but I cannot say for certain that he was the artist. The piece, which measures 12 3/4" by 8 3/4" inside the mat, and 22 1/2" by 18" as framed...

Fine old marine art drawing, in compromised condition, as found in Rhode Island, unframed, 13" by 19 1/2", signed at lower left corner "F R Smith". This is almost certainly by late 19th century American artist F. ROLLIN SMITH, who painted watercolors and oils of marine scenes. Little seems to be known of the artist but works do appear at auction. This drawing is a survivor, found in a portfolio of drawings in Providence, Rhode Island...

Watercolor on paper, 5 1/8" by 6 1/4" (13 1/2" by 14 7/8" framed), unsigned, but with a charming old dedication on the reverse side in sepia ink, "Mount Hood/From Vancouver/Eternal Snow/For Mother". This would refer to Vancouver, Washington, across the Columbia River from the mountain. Still adhering to the reverse is printed tape from an old business going by the name Arthur Wayman, of Salem, New York. And this was found in interior Maine...

An impressive watercolor landscape with Italian looking tree at left and extensive vista at right with small figures visible, unsigned on the front, but on the reverse is written in old pencil hand "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage" after JMW Turner by J Glen". This is therefore a 19th century work after a famous painting of Turner by that title, first exhibited in 1832...

Large, impressive watercolor painting of mountain laurel shrub and its delicate blossoms (the state flower of Connecticut, growing naturally in the wild, especially at higher elevations, and blooming in the month of May), 19" by 28 1/2" (27 1/2" by 35 1/2" framed), signed at lower right and dated there 1890, by the well listed Massachusetts artist RICHARD ANDREW (1869-1956). Andrew was born in Belfast, (Northern) Ireland and died in Gloucester, Massachusetts...

Circa 1870's watercolor, in Victorian or turn of the century gold frame, signed at lower left. Signed by an apparently little known artist, Carl H. Schmidt. The watercolor measures 9 1/2" by 13 1/4" (21" by 24 1/2" framed). The scenery portrayed is perhaps in the Northeast states. When I originally acquired this item, it was with a watercolor of Florida (copied from a Currier and Ives print), signed by the same artist. That piece, of the same age as this, was sold separately.

Watercolor on paper painting of a lone figure in a clearing surrounded by summer trees, unframed, 9 1/4" by 14", signed at lower left "S.J YARD. 97. JUNE." This is an eastern-looking work though the subject is almost certainly somewhere in Northern California. Yard was born in Rockford, Illinois where he was able to become introduced to art. Still young, after further art study in New York, he moved to London, coming under the tutelage of Royal Academician Sutton Palmer...

A watercolor on paper of a fruit seller’s stall or shop with a display of many different fruits while the merchant weighs fruit for two children, a woman turns away with figs in her basket and a young man in the shadows of the awning looks out, perhaps at the young woman with the figs. The watercolor shows touches of gouache and a few places the dark heightened with gum arabic. The paper is 13 ½ x 16 ¾ inches (34 x 42 cm) and the mat opening is 11 ¼ x/14 ¼ (28.5 x 36 cm)...

A fine early watercolor with gum arabic highlighting, the subject a stag in a landscape, by a well-listed English 19th century artist, NEWTON SMITH FIELDING (1799-1856). The work measures 5 3/8" by 8" and is laid on another piece of paper. Including the present mat, dimensions are 16" by 20". The signature is actually on that second piece of paper, in pencil, at lower center. Fielding was born in England and died in Paris...

A watercolor painting of raspberries in a small wicker basket, signed at lower right center with what appears as "J. L. Guinand", and dated there 1895. The work could be by a French artist or perhaps by an American with a French name. I do not see a listing for such an artist. The work measures 7 1/4" by 11 1/2" and 17 3/4" by 21 3/4" framed. The paper is slightly puckered and there is a small unexplained blue area at far right edge that seems out of place...

Antique watercolor painting of familiar Venice, Italy scene with gondolas, and historic buildings lining the canal, luminous reflections completing the image. The drawing measures 9" by 13 1/4" (15 3/4" by 20 3/4" framed). It is signed at lower left "G Marini". Condition is excellent. The drawing was likely created for the tourist trade in Venice in the early years of the century.

This is a very finely executed watercolor on paper of a young woman in the clothing of the old country. I've opened this up and see that the work is on paper laid on a board, and it is not signed...

I have searched for a listed artist that could correspond to this name but have not come up with a compatible listing. Purchased this at a flea market in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The work is in reasonable condition considering that it is 140 years old...there is foxing, some browned areas...
