PAIR of watercolors, the larger of raspberries on the vine, painted with amazing attention to detail and realism, measuring 10 3/4" by 8" inside the mat; the smaller painting of three bright red cherries and a leaf, measuring 6" by 9" inside the mat, BOTH SIGNED AT LOWER RIGHT with initials "M. C. R.". Since acquiring these works together at a shop in California's Gold Country a few years back, I have attempted to figure out who might have created them...

One of three works in my shop by the same artist, F. KENWOOD GILES of Bermuda, is this watercolor on paper painting, 14" by 19 1/2" inside the mat, 20 1/2" by 26 1/2" as framed, the subject a pink-walled, white-roofed island home on a lovely piece of property, flowering oleander shrubs and a few pines or cedars completing the happy scene. The paintings are not dated, but I believe that they would have been created in the 1950's...

This is a gouache and watercolor and ink on paper work, 21" by 29" (28 1/2" by 36" as framed), laid on board, by the California artist, socialite, and model, LUCILE BROKAW (1915-1984). The artist appears to be not well known today, although a student of George Grosz, but she was obviously talented and appears to have led a fascinating and glamorous life...

A fine watercolor painting of tulips in a vase, painted in a modernist style, 15 1/2" by 12" (28" by 24" framed), signed in pencil at lower right by artist JULIAN E. LEVI (1900-1982). The work is fresh and clean, and nicely matted and framed. Levi was born in New York and spent much of his life there. He did venture to Philadelphia for training at the Pennsylvania Academy under Arthur Carles, Daniel Garber, and Henry McCarter...

A finely executed watercolor landscape of a forested high rocky cliff overlooking a distant valley, signed at lower left "F Green" and dated there 1873. The work measures 16" by 12 3/4" and 23 1/2" by 20" as nicely framed, with hand drawn mat lines. I am inclined to think the artist was American but suppose he/she could have been English. There are two most-likely possibilities as to artist identity---Frank Russell Green (1856-1940) and a little-known "Francis Green"...

Antique watercolor painting of familiar Venice, Italy scene with gondolas, and historic buildings lining the canal, luminous reflections completing the image. The drawing measures 9" by 13 1/4" (15 3/4" by 20 3/4" framed). It is signed at lower left "G Marini". Condition is excellent. The drawing was likely created for the tourist trade in Venice in the early years of the century.

An old watercolor painting of the famous Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Germany, unsigned, circa 1940. The piece measures 9 1/4" by 7 1/2" inside the double mat and 14 1/4" by 11 1/2" as framed. The frame is modern and functional. Note the detail, including tiny figures and old cars and even double-decker buses. The gate, which dates to the 1730's, was severely damaged in World War II. I believe the artist may have created this during the war or just before it...

An original watercolor painting of the Arc du Carrousel in central Paris, 12" by 15 1/2" (18 1/4" by 21 1/2" framed), signed illegibly at lower right, (possibly, "F Lacoste"), circa late 20th century. The Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel is a triumphal arch in Paris, located in the Place du Carrousel. The ornate, impressive structure was built between 1806 and 1808 to commemorate Napoleon's military victories of the previous year...

This is a small watercolor on thin card of a young woman with peaches and cream complexion and ringlets in her hair in the style of the 1820's through about 1860, unsigned, 5 3/4" by 3 3/4" plus narrow late 20th century frame, At first glance I thought this English or American, or Canadian, considering the Toronto gallery stamp on the framing paper, but upon opening it I discovered a stamp in old German script on the reverse, as shown...

A Southwest watercolor on paper painting of fanciful characterizations of a Latino heritage boy and girl, signed at lower right by noted Tucson, Arizona artist GERRY PEIRCE (1900-1969). A simple yet satisfying little watercolor depicting central Paris along the river Seine, Notre Dame in the center distance. The work is signed at lower left by French mid century artist Fernand Guignier and dated there 1966. Guignier is listed, with some auction records, but there does not appear to be an extensive biography. Typical works are in watercolor medium and feature Montmartre and scenes around the Seine in the center of the "City of Light"...

A rare, early (1934) watercolor from an artist of the so-called "Lost Colony" of Saint Augustine, Florida artists, ROBERT HAMILTON, featuring one of the classic old buildings of the town dating to the end of the 18th century, the "Old Fatio House", (known today as the "Ximenez-Fatio House"), painted in an impressionist hand.
