A peaceful scene---slow moving creek in a landscape, bordered by trees in what appears to be early autumn, signed at lower left center by Massachusetts listed artist JOHN J. FRANCIS (1862-1933). The work is competently painted by an artist who seems to have specialized in the watercolor medium. His works are often encountered in New England. Auction records seem to be hopeless entangled with another American artist with the same name, born in 1889 and died 1939...

An antique drawing in ink and watercolor, 4 1/4" by 6 3/4" inside the mat, 11" by 13 1/4" framed, unsigned, featuring a rolling landscape with stand of trees and tiny figures. At left a full hay wagon is pulled by an animal; at center a couple walks together; at right, three others take a break and chat. This could possibly be an American drawing after an English etching. The materials and framing look American, the scene less so...

For the collector of botanical drawings and art, a nice unframed 11 7/8" by 9 3/8" floral watercolor drawing highlighted with a little gum arabic in the nineteenth century tradition. It is not signed, but I think at lower left in old faint pencil it says "yellow aralia", and at bottom, very faint and barely visible, there is a lot of illegible pencil writing. This likely dates to the 1860's to 1880's period...

A beautifully executed watercolor painting of a proper Victorian lady in her fine parlor, her chair and small table sitting on a bear skin rug. The work is unfortunately unsigned. It measures 18 1/4" by 12 3/4" at the mat opening (25 1/2" by 19 1/2" as framed). This was acquired from a New Jersey dealer, in Florida. He claimed to have had a bit of paper with the name of the artist but has never been able to come up with it despite my requests...

PAIR of watercolor still life paintings of floral subjects, 8 1/2" by 7" inside the mat (16" by 14" framed), circa mid 19th century, likely American (purchased in Maine). Note the exquisite detail and color. Hand drawn mats add to the vintage appeal. Later 20th century gold frames are in good condition. One mat has old browning/possible water damage at lower right, not affecting the art.

Antique watercolor painting, beautifully executed, the image featuring a wrapped ceramic vessel, old leather-bound books, and a pair of red ornate slippers, the work signed at lower right in pencil "Emily J. Hare 1892". The painting, paper laid on a thin board, measures 10 1/2" by 14 1/2" and 14" by 18" framed. Despite the obvious skill of the artist, the only online references I see to this name are to a woman born circa 1871 in Maine to English and Canadian parentage...

The watercolor is on paper and measures 8 1/2" by 18 3/4" (15 1/4" by 25 1/4" as framed). The work is in excellent condition with no foxing visible. I do not see an obvious listing for the artist. Circa 1900 watercolor of the heart of Venice, Italy, including the familiar sights of canal and gondola, St. Mark's Basilica church and the famous clock tower on the Piazza San Marco, signed at lower left "E.K. This is a well executed impressionistic watercolor of haystacks on a marsh, a popular theme in American art, addressed most notably during the third quarter of the nineteenth century by the great Martin Johnson Heade, in the marshes of coastal northeastern Massachusetts. This painting on heavy paper was laid down to an old board a long time ago. Unfortunately it does not appear to be signed, at least not on the front. Watercolor with gouache highlights on paper painting 13 3/4" by 9 1/2" inside the mat, of a large and impressive castle on a hill, (possibly Windsor Castle near London), a pastoral landscape with figures in the foreground, signed in pencil at lower right "A WATT". It has been suggested that this could be the famous Petra, Jordan site of classical antiquity. The work, glued to a sheet with "Ackermann & Co." blindstamped into the right corner, is unsigned. Hudson River School style watercolor on paper, 13 1/2" by 19" inside the mat, 24" by 30" as framed, signed at lower right "Byron Albee". This is a subtle, delicate, beautifully executed watercolor of trees and a line of stones next to a pond. Because it IS so subtle, it does not photograph impressively; but in person it is appealing. An unframed antique, 19th century watercolor of two Indians paddling a canoe in a raging small river between steep cliffs, signed at lower right with what appears as "Catherine Stuart 1879". The 7 5/8" by 10 3/4" work strongly reminiscent of paintings and watercolors by noted Canadian artists Cornelius Krieghoff (1815-1872), Alfred Worsley Holdstock (1820-1901), Frederick Arthur Verner (1836-1928). The watercolor, 14 1/2" by 10 1/2" inside the mat, 24 1/2" by 21" framed, is probably English or continental European, and circa 1860's or thereabouts. Found in New Hampshire, this is an antique unsigned watercolor of a rocky coastline, sailing boats on the horizon. Measuring 13 1/2" by 19 1/2", the work on paper is glued down to an 1893 Salem, Massachusetts legal directory, the edges of which are crumbling. Those edges should probably be trimmed, and the watercolor then framed to preserve it for another century. Though simple and monochromatic, this is a work well worth preserving. One corner is brittle.

A 19thC framed watercolour picture of a child 1860-80. This late Victorian period unsigned framed water color on paper is a piece of early memorial folk art and it was possibly made by a family member as a reminder of a deceased child, with typical muted colours and austere pose. This Victorian picture is a lovingly made piece, most likely a memorial painting, with a hand-cut deep red velvet mat, a gilt paper mount from a photo-album page and a black and gilt frame with applied brass Coptic cro...

There is also a pencil study of the doorway on the reverse (see last photo). Any number of artists could have created this. It reminds me of a home you'd see in a watercolor by Edward Lamson Henry. This is a wonderful large watercolor (18 1/2" by 27"----28" by 36" as framed) executed in the nineteenth century by English artist WALTER TOMLINSON (ca. 1833-1909). The scene is Ann Hathaway's famous cottage in Stratford-on-Avon, which Shakespeare lovers will recognize as the town associated closely with the Bard himself. I thought this at first a print, the detail is so life-like and convincing, but closer examination revealed that it is indeed an original drawn work on paper, measuring 9 1/2" by 7" (15" by 13" framed). The artist must have had tremendous patience, or lots of time on his or her hands, to have created each leaf and flower. The work probably dates to the 19th century. As would be expected in art of this age, there are a few discolored areas at lower left and lower right, but they just add to th...
