Although raised and educated in Texas, Joe Dawley moved to New Jersey in the early 1960's where he remained. He painted in the traditional Old Masters style until 1982, when the symptoms of Parkinson's - diagnosed in 1975 - necessitated brain surgery. One of his accolades during that period was being commissioned to paint the official portrait of Mother Seton for the canonization in 1976...

A nicely painted miniature painting of a blue-eyed gentleman wearing a black tie, coat and black silk vest. The artist has chosen a nice blue background, complementing the sitter's eyes.

The condition of the painting the case are excellent. The spots on the painting are bits of dust, and the lighter color black along the inner edges of the coat are intentionally painted that way. The case size is 2 3/4" by 2 3/8".

A finely drawn pastel of a classic Native American woman subject, who stares directly at the viewer with her handsome prominent cheekbones which are set off by black pig tails, 12 1/4" x 8 3/4" (17 1/2" by 13 1/2" framed), by England-born California artist LEONARD BORMAN (1894-1995). A rare, historical, early pastel on heavy paper laid to card drawing of a young Zuni indian girl in Arizona, unsigned, circa late 19th century, including the original gold mat, decorated with images of tipis and spears. The work measures 18" by 12" (entire mat) and 12 3/4" by 6 1/4" inside the mat. Sadly, the old antique work has been damaged. There is a darkened diagonal stain that extends from upper right down across the front of the face and into the hair...

Oil on canvas painting of a tawny autumn landscape,15 3/4 " by 20 3/4" (20 3/4" by 25" framed), not signed on the front, but bearing a tattered label with an apparent name beginning with "Eve..", and dedicated on the reverse of the canvas in 1933. The reverse inscription says "Merry Christmas 1933/to Lulu (XXX--unreadable)/old friend (XXX---unreadable). This might be a California landscape, but it would be difficult to state that with any certainty...

Jake Lee's works are increasingly sought after by collectors in the wake of his relatively recent passing, some works approaching $20,000 at auctions. This is a clean, unusually large (24" by 36" plus 4" on a side framing) example, painted directly on board in heavy gouache or tempera (thinned oil?) and in excellent condition. A group of three small watercolors of scenes in rural Hambleden, England, by late 20th century English artist (Mrs.) P. Begley. The three each measure 5 1/2" by 8" (10 1/2" by 12 1/2" identically framed). Each is signed with conjoined initials PB in lower left corner and the artist wrote her address and titles on reverse backing. The works probably date to circa 1980. Pleasing scenes of the classic, peaceful countryside of England...

In any event this is a decorative old vintage watercolor landscape by a talented artist, still in its original frame. There's no glass currently, but the work has survived the passage of time in excellent fresh condition, with only a tiny handful of foxing spots...
