Brooks Pettus (1918-2003) was a noted western American artist who passed away in Kennewick, Washington, leaving behind a large body of work in watercolor and oil that only recently appeared on the market. Pettus earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of New Mexico, and spent time in Albuquerque and Taos in the early 1940's. New Mexico's artistically inspiring landscape stimulated Pettus' aesthetic sense as it has for countless others...

A fine portrait of a lovely young girl, oil on canvas, 14" by 10 1/2", unframed, signed at upper left by listed French artist MAURICE JACQUET (1877-). Jacquet seems to have painted mainly portraits of young women, but a few landscapes are known. This work has just been cleaned and relined, as when found it had a very dry blanched unstable surface, and some loss areas...

Oil on wood panel of a lady under a portico or trellis high above a coast like Amalfi in Italy, signed at lower right with initials "EC" and dated there "03". The work measures 12" by 7 1/2" (18" by 12 3/4" as framed). On the reverse of the panel is written in pencil old handwriting "E. W. Clawson 431 Pacific St.". It's possible that this could be the artist ("EC") but I can't be certain of that. I do think that a professional cleaning would be well worth the investment...

Oil on board painting of a sunny street scene in southern Italy, a central figure walking towards the viewer and others going about their business including washing clothes. The painting, signed at lower left "Pasini", measures 17 1/2" by 11 1/2" (21 1/2" by 15 1/2" in attractive old gold framing). The work likely dates to about 1900 or 1910. There is a light accumulated soiling and yellowed varnish that would make a cleaning well worth the investment...

This is a work by a significant and interesting figure in the history of early 20th century art and culture.......a watercolor and gouache painting, 14 1/2" by 21" (and 2" wide frame), signed at lower right in pencil "Charles R. Hulbeck" and dated "42". I did some research and determined that that name was a pen name for RICHARD HUELSENBECK (1892-1974), one of the earliest founders and participants in the Dada phenomenon in the teens and 1920's...

In the style of mid nineteenth century American folk art is this charming work (27 1/2" by 20 1/2"---33 1/2" by 26 1/2" framed) depicting a young lady with sun bonnet and scythe and wheat in hand, as if she has just come in from the fields. The pastel mastery is obvious; the artist, anonymous. The work is framed and behind heavy non-glare glass which tends to blur detail and is not generally safe to ship, as it is highly likely to shatter in transit...

An unframed antique, 19th century watercolor of two Indians paddling a canoe in a raging small river between steep cliffs, signed at lower right with what appears as "Catherine Stuart 1879". The 7 5/8" by 10 3/4" work strongly reminiscent of paintings and watercolors by noted Canadian artists Cornelius Krieghoff (1815-1872), Alfred Worsley Holdstock (1820-1901), Frederick Arthur Verner (1836-1928). Strangely, an online search has not turned up information on the present artist...

Vintage circa 1880's oil on canvas, 20" by 14" and 1" wide old dark oak simple frame, likely the original, signed at lower right side with the typical conjoined "MStraus" signature of well listed Northern California artist MEYER STRAUS (1831-1905). Watercolor on paper painting of a lovely young woman in turn of the century Italy, likely Venice, 13" by 10 1/4" inside the mat, 21" by 17 1/2" in pleasing coppery gold frame, signed at lower right by artist D. G. ANGIOLINI. The artist is obviously highly skilled. Paintings by this D. G. Angiolini generally feature genre scenes of Venice, or views of Venice.
