This is a fine, limited edition wood engraving by the highly regarded American artist THOMAS WILLOUGHBY NASON (1889-1971). In 1968 Haku Maki completed his Animal Song series. It was 12 different prints, one for each year of the Chinese/Japanese zodiac. Each print had the title Animal Song and the kanji for the animal, which was not translated. This print, Animal Song [dragon], 14/50, is a beautiful Maki red. The dragon of the image is a very traditional Chinese character for dragon. In this print Maki used the theme dragon for the first time. This dashing abstract kanji seems to almost swirl out of the paper...

Original etching on paper watermarked "France" (probably Arches paper), 9 3/4" by 7 7/8" (image only), and the sheet with at least 1 1/8" margins (up to nearly 2" at right), pencil signed at lower right by the noted American printmaker LUIGI LUCIONI (1900-1988). This is no doubt a Vermont landscape scene, as Lucioni's prints largely deal with the classic mountain scenery of that state...

In the last year of Maki’s life, Daniel Tretiak tells us, he was ill but continued to work. He did lithographs on shikishi board, which was a hard board covered in white rice paper. The back was yellow with a small design in gold and the whole board is gold-edged. Poem 8B is one of those works done in the 1999-2000 period.

A Wallace Nutting Nursing the Fire pencil signed photo. This unframed hand coloured and signed photograph print is by Wallace Nutting who was famous for his tinted photos, and those in our listings (four in total) are all sought after interior scenes. Dragons—or at least the kanji for them—featured often in Haku Maki’s work. Work 73-12A –black kanji on white—came out first in 1973 and was followed quickly by a black dragon on red (which follows this one on this site). It measures 11.5inW x 15.25inH, is 16 of an edition of 103, and is in good condition

Large folio size print, sheet measuring 18 1/4" by 24 1/2" inside the mat, 27 1/4" by 33 1/2" as framed, titled at bottom. This image was produced by Currier in 1868, but I believe this example to be a high quality hand colored RESTRIKE of a later date. It's a great image, with grandparents in their snug Victorian 1860's New England interior, a roaring fire and their granddaughter indicating the other seasons of life. The print is in excellent fresh condition; allow for reflections in glass....
